can you recommend a washing powder that doesnt aggravate it? ds has just started developing patches of what looks like eczema (he's 2, has had it occasionally before but always cleared up). the only recent change is diff brand of washing powder so suspect it might be responsible. any advice?

We can use anything, but you need to cut the amounts used right down. I use a desert spoon. I know somepeople who use a formula milk scoop. Then watch the rinse cycle, if you see bubbles, keep rinsing. ALways always do at least an extra rinse.

Hope this helps.

Ds2 has it really badly (flaring at the moment) and he's 3 in Jan. I use fairy non bio and it's never bothered his skin. I use aveeno cream, bath oil, body wash etc which I've found amazing (tried loads).

My dd had really bad eczema when she was 1, (shes now 2), doc prescribed loads of creams and a special sleep suit but nothing worked, then I changed to sure care washing powder, its fragrance free and eczema cleared up within three days and it hasn't had it since.

We use Tesco non-bio and find it fine -- used to use Surcare when DS1's eczema was really bad.

Stop using fabric conditioner (if you do) as that can irritate skin.

using surf at the moment but at less than half the stated amount and with a long extra rinse.

CaptainNancy · 19/12/2009 22:23

We use fairy non-bio and no fabric conditioner.
When he's really bad, I put the machine back onto an extra rinse cycle too.

mckenzie · 19/12/2009 22:26

we found different detergents didn't make any difference but homeopathy did. Whether DD was at the age to outgrow the eczema anyway we'll never know but I'd still recommend giving homeopathy a go if you can afford to visit a good practitioner (and I'm not one so this isn't a sales pitch )

Drusilla · 19/12/2009 22:28

We use Fairy non-bio (although actually any non-bio is ok with DS). Definitely NO fabric conditioner though, it is the devils work as far as mine and DS skin concerned.

addictedtolatte · 19/12/2009 22:46

extra rinse cycle here too

chegirlwithbellson · 19/12/2009 22:48

DS has severe atopic eczema. He is nearly 7.

We use Fairy non bio at the moment but can use other non bios. I tend not to change unless I really have to. Its not worth the risk. Its taken us nearly 7 years to get anywhere with DS's skin.

We do not use fabric conditioner at all.

If I have really dirty stained stuff (not unusual with my lot) I will wash with all the usual chemical help but then wash again with non bio.

A right old faff but worth it.

Gubbins · 21/12/2009 14:17

Surecare is a whole lot better for us than standard non-bios, but I still only use that when things are filthy. I usually use washing balls or soap nuts, cos I am a complete hippy.

(Only for the eczmatious one, though. It's persil for the rest of us.)

spicybingowings · 21/12/2009 16:31

Ecover or Surcare - non bio washing powder and the fabric softener, neither of these irritate DD1's eczema.

EldonAve · 21/12/2009 16:33

surcare or waitrose sensitive
plus an extra rinse

GrendelsMum · 21/12/2009 18:40

Filetti, and no fabric softener.

manyhands · 21/12/2009 23:03

Eco balls are great, you can get them from e-bay.

fifitot · 23/12/2009 15:01

Ecover every time and agree about Aveeno cream. Better than anything we ever got on prescription.

nouveaupauvre · 27/12/2009 20:59

thankyou that's really helpful all of you - have just bought some surcare and fingers crossed....

Surecare, aveeno and have you tried moving to semi skimmed milk (if on full fat) - works for some (including mine although I didn't spot the link until someone else told me that had been recommended for her 2
