I've had it for ages but finally dared to use it last night, and then kept unzipping DD and checking her for dampness during her many many night-wakings, but it worked! I'm so amazed

However, we do have a big problem with the fact that it STINKS. I hung it in the living room to air and thought we must have a tramp slumped in the corner. I have a cold but the startling smell of ammonia is cutting right through my stuffy nose. Are they one use only or are we doing something wrong or is DD just unusually stinky?

Help!

We had the same problem with our fleece wrap - one use only and it had to go in the wash. Phoooooo-ey!

DitaVonCheese · 18/12/2009 23:08

Ah - perhaps that is just the nature of them then. I thought they'd last a few wears like PUL wraps. Good to know that DD doesn't have some terrible smelly-wee disease!

My fleecies usually last a couple of wears without getting stinky. But I stick them in with any old washing and they are dry in a few minutes - that's the beauty of fleece!

yes, if you think about it, several wears of a wrap usually involves a clean/dry nappy every couple/few hours! But with fleece you're using a more fabric like cover for the same nappy all night! So it's got dampness next to it the whole time, and imho it's bound to be rather smelly by morning!

DitaVonCheese · 20/12/2009 00:16

Good point!

It really helped that DD is obsessed with the blind behind our bed, so spent a lot of time sitting on my face whilst trying to get at it

Is it too stuffed? I found if the nappy was really big inside that it was more smelly. But TBH, I gave up on fleece cos I couldn't stand the smell. Different is you have somewhere you can air it without stinking hte house out... I do think the nappy rash etc is taken away as it is totally breathable - hence the smell (some evaporates through!)

swampster · 20/12/2009 12:06

I think some of the [cough] cheaper fleeces can get very smelly. I remember having whiffy problems in the distant past but now I have lovely, lovely Sugar Peas fleeces and they really don't go like that at all.

DitaVonCheese · 20/12/2009 14:53

The nappy is a Minki one (a Huggle? sleep deprivation has melted my brain) plus a homemade bamboo + microfleece booster (she pees like a carthorse), so pretty big, yeah! She does have bad nappy rash, so perhaps I should continue using it and air it on the line outside. Wrap is a Tots Bots one - not sure whether it's a cheap one or not

[fleece snob emoticon] Sugar Peas are made from lovely Malden Mills fleece which is just gorgeous. I also like Stacinators though they are a bit chunky compared. The fleece I had whiffy problems with (about five years ago!) was a very cute Tots Bots one, blue with spots on. I never had trouble with the Tots Bots redraps though. If I were you I'd just wash the fleece every day with any old laundry, nappy or non-nappy. It will be dry long before you need it again.

DitaVonCheese · 20/12/2009 15:20

Ah, my TB is a red one You are so right that it dries fast though - doh, I will just do that and maybe treat myself to a posho one in the new year

Rinse it with mild soap and water and then hang it up! fleece dries quickly, but it isn't water proof. It's a fabric and you can't expect a fabric to be covered in pee then not smell of pee!

AnnieLobeseder · 20/12/2009 21:17

It was so long ago that we used fleece I forgot - I just used to rinse it with soap and water in the sink in the morning and it was dry by bedtime.....

thisisyesterday · 20/12/2009 21:21

no sadly they do need washing each time, it's why i stopped using mine and switched to wool! they'll go ages without a wash

DitaVonCheese · 20/12/2009 23:11

coldtits That made me giggle - perhaps I should have posted in AIBU

yesterday Ah, that's the next step, but I imagine I'll have to wait until DC2 to get that far, judging by how long it took me to try fleece!

I use fleece pumpkin pants and wash every time - I think though it repels the wee it def absorbs the odour - I found the same with wool tbh. Fleece easier to care for ime but wool super cute - tricky

thebluefoxategreensocks · 22/12/2009 16:36

Wool does air out better than fleece though! As long as they're regularly lanolised (every 6 weeks or so) then if you hang them to air out for a day after use, they don't stink at all! [says me who no longer uses wool with fitteds but only pockets, due to super sensitive skin little boys! ] But we used wool all the time for a good year or more!

swampster · 22/12/2009 17:05

I honestly find Malden Mills fleece does not stink like other fleece, so Sugar Peas and Stacinators have worked really well for us. I really think you get what you pay for with fleece so while I quite like the look of Pumpkin Pants I'm not about to try them.

My woollies also air out beautifully. I do lanolise regularly. They take forever and a day to dry but are sooooooo lovely, especially in this weather. I do love a cosy, warm baby.

Octohohohoho · 22/12/2009 21:13

Its not that it stinks but I would wash anyway - I found wool smelly - but used to pop on radiator so think it radiated!!

Octohohohoho · 22/12/2009 21:34

(((swampster doesn't like anything I do lol)))

Maybe swampster should take some of her own advice and try new stuff!

swampster · 22/12/2009 22:45

I lust after your monkey feet, Octo!

And I really like the look of pumpkin pants, especially the sharkie ones but am fleeced and woollied out at the mo.

Octohohohoho · 22/12/2009 23:05

A couple of folk didn't claim their muddy ones!

Octohohohoho · 22/12/2009 23:14
