What does thrush in babies look like?

10 month old DC is teething, has red bottom which I've presumed is nappy rash. However wet nappies seem a lot smellier - I know that sounds weird but they are, and I wondered suddenly whether this is thrush or something else? Can anyone help?

My 11.5 mo DS has had a few days of red bottom this week and the nursery said it could be thrush. It was little red raised spots rather than just general redness IYSWIM. I had decided that if it was still as bad this morning I would take him to the doctor. However, I've been slathering him in three inches of Sudocrem for the past couple of days and it seems finally to have taken effect as it was much improved today. On the (possibly mistaken) assumption that thrush would need some special treatment to improve like that, I didn't take him, but if it worsens again I will either go to a walk-in centre or go and ask my (very helpful) local pharmacist's advice. You could try the full-on Sudocrem approach and see if that helps. Sorry I can't be more useful on the actual thrush question.

Should've said - my DS has had smelly-wee nappies before when teething and it seems to be linked more with teething than with a rash or anything else.

ah thanks sleightieschick - partic the smelly wee bit -that is what was puzzling me. I will see how the slathering of sudocrem and see if better tomorrow otherwise going to lovely pharmacist myself

Smelly wee definately associated with teething (and also the consumption of broccoli and garlic )

Thrush in the nappy area usually associated with open sores/weeping skin. I've found Bepanthen cream very effective against very bad nappy rash (that Sudocrem couldn't even touch)
