How many 4 year olds? Too many in large group and it's like trying to herd butterflies and best not to even atempt to organise them.

Otherwise try the old favourites:
Pass the Parcel
Musical statues
Musical chairs (although I usually adapt this to pictures on the floor to stand on - less of a scrum than actual chairs)
Sleeping lions (for a few mintes peace).
Treasure hunt
Simon Says

Most of these are easily adaptable to a theme if you have one.

1.Musical bumps - I am yet to find four year olds who can do musical statues!!
2.Hopping Bunnies
3.Pass the parcel (make sure you have enough layers for all at the party to open at least one)

  1. Best dancer competition

oooooooooooooh I do like best dancer comp .

Great ideas so far, they will all go on my list. How many do I need for 7 of them for 2.5 hours with a birthday tea in the middle somewhere?

It's not a game, but when my daughter was 4 she loved doing the hokey cokey - that can pass a few minutes! The Farmers in the Den was popular too.

I'd suggest having lots of teeny prizes in and being ready to play successful games several times - at that sort of age it can take them a few rounds to get the hang of the game, but each round will only last a few minutes.

How about having a craft activity as well? At my 3yo's party I printed out lots of Charlie and Lola colouring sheets from the CBeebies website, got some crayons and sticker stars and let them do their worst best.

Not sure what the game was called but it went something like this...

You sat in a circle then you each threw a dice in turn and if you got a six you had to put on a hat/scarf/gloves then use a knife and fork to cut a big bar of chocolate up into small pieces (you weren't allowed to use your fingers) and you could eat as much chocolate as you wanted whilst the rest of the group threw a dice until they got a "six".

As soon as someone got a six it was their turn to dress up in the hat/scarf/gloves. It was a fun and frantic game ... not sure how suitable it would be for 4 year old's ...I think we might have been a little bit older and I also think we shouted "Charlie" when a six was thrown to signal that it was the next person's turn. So maybe we called the game "Charlie" ... ahhhh good memories of lots of chocolate eating ....

If you like the best dancer idea I used to do loads of variations on the theme, not just for parties.
Best ballet dance.
Best bottom wiggle dance.
Best air guitar.
Best dancing with your eyes shut
etc. etc.

It's good for wearing them out while you sit still playing the music and judging.

ah yes the chocolate game!! I might try it with choc buttons and a spoon as they're younger.

I remember it fondly......!

There was another one as well ... which involved eating smarties. I think each child takes it in turns to go out of the room whilst the rest of the children pick a colour of smartie. Then the child comes back in the room and starts eating the smarties until they pick the colour one that has been chosen (I guess you could put out a couple of each colour of the smartie) ...

As you can see my memory of party games only extends to those that involve chocolate ...

I did a party on Saturday for five year old. There were 15 girls.

Timings went like this:-
4.00 arrive
4.10-4.30 Ballet (I'm a ballet teacher!)
4.30-4.45 Dancing competition. Split group in half. Half watched and voted then swapped so two prizes.
4.45-4.50 Pass the parcel
4.50-5.00 Sleeping bunnies
5.00-5.25 Tea and cake
5.25-5.30 Sit down activity. I painted glittery nails and put glitter gel on their arms whilst reading a story. (they loved it)
5.30-5.45 Musical Bumps
5.45-5.50 Cool down (calm music)
5.50 Collect coats, put on shoes and sit in a circle so they are all ready to go.

Birthday girl gives out party bags (still in circle). Everyone says thank you.

Children picked up at 6.00

Hope this helps!!!!
