dh lets dd watch these now, she's 3 and loves them.

I think she's too young, what's the general consensus?

They are very black and white for children - all the characters are either goodies or baddies - no inbetween. I doubt she'll get the storyline but will get the concept of who is good and bad and let's face it the goodies always win.
My DS loves Star Wars (not in to Dr Who yet).
he started watching at about 5 or so - even at nearly 7 he scarcely understands the story but he knows Darth Vader is a baddie and Luke Skywalker is the goodie.

It depends entirely on the child. Both of mine have been watching Dr Who pretty much their whole lives as their dad is a scifi nut. It has never scared or worried either of them, they both really enjoy watching stuff like that.

If your three year old seems to enjoy it and isn't scared, there's no problem. The moment she gets upset by anything she's watching, time for a break from it.

ds is 4 and loves star wars. the underlying story is a good one.

young boy fulfils dream
he is tempted by evil
becomes bad
but in the end he is redeemed through his love for his children.

I dont let ds watch certain parts though, for example he doesnt know HOW anakin becomes darth vadar. he just knows that he turns back eventually!

DS is 7 and loves Star Wars but too scared to watch Dr W.

dd watched star wars for the first time at about 3. She loves it but probably doesn't understand half of it. She's never seen Dr Who.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 10/12/2009 20:22

3 for us here too, some of them she doesn't like, the spiders for example so she doesn't watch that episode.

traceybath · 10/12/2009 20:26

I think Dr Who varies hugely from episode to episode - some I'd let ds1 whose 5 watch but not all of them.

paisleyleaf · 10/12/2009 20:28

My DD's 5 and neither would be suitable for her for quite a while.

DS first saw Star Wars when he was about 4 and he loves the films and, at 5.6, watches them regularly with my nerdy DH. We did have to explain that Star Wars came first and the bit in Toy Story 2 was a later copy ("No Buzz, I am your father"). He has always watched Dr Who too, but once he was over 2 we checked the BBC website for their scare rating before letting him watch as some of them are terrifying.

minxofmancunia · 10/12/2009 20:36

she's not at all scared and knows who the goodies and baddies are!

dh (major geek) knows all the dr who episodes inside out so he'll say which ones are "mild peril" and which are full on terrifying. I can't watch them due to the fact I have compulsions to smash the tv every time David "overacting" Tennant, Billie "irritating put on lisp" Piper and catherine "not funny" Tate open their mouths . Tolerate the episodes with Freema as she's ok.

I do however like Star Wars quite a lot

dd is (just) 4 and loves Star Wars.

shonaspurtle · 10/12/2009 20:44

Ds loves Dr Who and is 3. Dh watches the reruns constantly so he's seen it then.

He's gradually starting to get a bit scared by some parts now though so I suspect we'll be taking a break from it soon for a few years and dh will just have to catch up on iPlayer.
