mulledfruitshootandcheese · 09/12/2009 15:49

I am trying to do a case study on The effectiveness of modern film posters as advertising and thought a survey would help with my research. Sorry if its a bit long.

  1. Do you live in an urban or a rural area?

  2. What inspires you to go and see a film?

a. recommended by someone else
b. trailer on the TV
c. trailer on the internet
d. Poster of the film
e. Read the book first
f. Other advertising (such as?)

  1. Do you think that film posters are still needed as essential advertising for a film? Please give reasons.

  2. Do you have any film posters? If so did you buy it because of the film, because you liked the poster design or both?

  3. Do you think modern film posters are more or less memorable than the illustrated film posters made before digital technology.

  4. Which film poster, if any do you think is iconic?

Please look at these Polish film posters

  1. Do you prefer the ?artiness? of Polish film posters to the classic photographic, digital images of modern UK and US film posters.

  2. Do you have or have you seen any film posters from other countries that you have really liked.

  3. Can you name a film poster from the last couple of years that you think is particularly memorable?

  4. What was the last film you saw, a) what made you go to see it and b) can you remember the poster for the film?

Thankyou and have a virtual mince pie for taking my survey.

  2. B
  3. I have been reminded about a trailer I have seen on TV by the poster on a bus stop, so they probably help, although I am not sure whether essential or not!
  4. No, I have never owned a film poster.
  5. I have not idea?!
  6. I can't really think of any!
  7. I really should not be doing this survey, I have no idea about the differences!
  8. no
  9. no
10. Ice Age Dawn of the Dinosaur. I thought my son age 3 would like it as he liked the previous ones and also he loves dinosaurs. I cannot recall the poster, but I did see one on a bus stop which prompted me to go, however, it was seeing it advertised on TV that made the most difference.

Sorry, I wanted to help, but I have been rubbish!! Good luck!

eggontoast · 09/12/2009 16:52

I have just seen the link to the Polish posters - 6. None appeal to me particularly.

  1. I prefer the posters from the UK and US - probably because I am used to them though.

Thanks egg

  1. Urban

  2. Having a babysitter a. recommended by someone else

  3. Yes I think so, so we know who's in it, who directed it, a general idea of what genre it's about can all be obtained in about 1 second when it would take much longer to tell you all that information.

  4. No.

  5. The same. I'm not really in the demographic of people that would collect film posters. I am too busy and have other more mundane interests.

  6. Which film poster, if any do you think is iconic? Well the ones I can remember seeing are: Pulp Fiction, Trainspotting, Gone with the Wind, Breaksfast at Tiffany's

  7. No. I actually think some of them give too much of the film away - like the Rosemary's Baby one. It is too explicit in it's meaning (IYSWIM). I liked the art of the Raging Bull one - that was quite good, but when I think of the US one it's nowhere near as effective. And some of them are just downright odd!

  8. Amelie. But that's probably because it's one of my favourite films.

  9. Not from the last couple of years no

  10. It was The Time Traveler's Wife a) I went because I had read the book and they were doing a newbie screening and I could take the baby. b) I think it has the female lead (Rachel McAdams) in a white dress hugging the male lead (Eric someone??). But I could be wrong.

JustAnotherManicMummy · 09/12/2009 17:52

mulled do you need info about us replying for your study? Like age range, gender, occupation, number of children etc to help interpret your results?

  1. Rural

  2. What inspires you to go and see a film?

b. trailer on the TV (usually)

  1. Do you think that film posters are still needed as essential advertising for a film? Please give reasons.

I think so. An attention-grabbing one will make me google a movie if I haven't already seen a trailer.

  1. Do you have any film posters? If so did you buy it because of the film, because you liked the poster design or both?

When I was a student I had the Taxi Driver poster and a Usual Suspects one, partly because I like the posters, partly because I like the films and partly because I thought it made me look cool.

  1. Do you think modern film posters are more or less memorable than the illustrated film posters made before digital technology.

No difference. The design is important, not the method. The Usual Suspects one is one of my all times faves and that's just 5 blokes standing in a row.

  1. Which film poster, if any do you think is iconic?

Usual Suspects, Jaws, Pulp Fiction.

Please look at these Polish film posters

  1. Do you prefer the ?artiness? of Polish film posters to the classic photographic, digital images of modern UK and US film posters.

They are very beautiful but I see film posters as an advertisement for the film rather than as stand alone artwork and I like them to give me some idea of what to expect in the movie. Those Polish posters would make me think I was going to see some kind of weird animation.

  1. Do you have or have you seen any film posters from other countries that you have really liked.

Can't say I've paid much attention, sorry!

  1. Can you name a film poster from the last couple of years that you think is particularly memorable?

Er.... no. I've got a 14 month old, I've been to the cinema twice in as many years

  1. What was the last film you saw, a) what made you go to see it and b) can you remember the poster for the film?

I saw the latest Harry Potter because I'm a fan, can't remember the poster though. It was probably of him pointing his wand.

Hope that's helpful!

  1. Rural

  2. Reviews, director,

  3. yes, they pop up in day to day life - bus stops etc where you wouldn't normally be thinking about what's coming on at the cinema.

  4. I didn't personally own it, but I shared a flat with someone who had this one up. (The young Luke Skywalker with the shadow of Darth Vader
The poster design is very good and perhaps better than the film.

  5. I can't chose one. I guess some of them that are just lettering/font. like the God Father, Aliens etc.

  6. No

  7. No

  8. No

  9. Up a) Good reviews, like the filmakers' previous work. b) I have a couple of images in my mind - but not sure if either of them are the actual poster image.

You don't need to be very specific - ie for age 18-24, 25-34, 35-44, 45-55, 60+

occupation - student, SAHM, unemployed, mangement/professional,

I would expect a 22 year old, male student would give quite different answers to us mums

For age I would be in the 25-34 camp

Gender - female

Occupation - management/professional

1 DC under 2 yo.

mathanxiety · 09/12/2009 18:46

1-Urban

2-Read review in paper

3-Not essential; plenty of other ways to give a feel of the film.

4-No, don't have any

5-Not more, and not less either; about the same mostly.

6-Gone with the Wind, The Third Man, Breakfast at Tiffany's

7-I don't prefer the 'artiness' in these posters. I think the images are a bit too like book covers, too literal, and a bit 'schoolish'. US/UK images are higher tech but have the same defect, imo.

8-None jump out at me. In general, I prefer images that are abstract, or not addressing every word in the title, images that convey the sense or the mood without spelling it out.

9-Nothing springs to mind.

10-In Bruges. Read great review, like Colin Farrell, can't remember the poster.

Jux · 09/12/2009 18:51
  1. Do you live in an urban or a rural area?
Rural urban (small town in middle of valley surrounded by hills and fields)

  2. What inspires you to go and see a film?
Usually a holiday treat for dd; otherwise any of your options a-e could inspire us to get it out on dvd

a. recommended by someone else
b. trailer on the TV
c. trailer on the internet
d. Poster of the film
e. Read the book first
f. Other advertising (such as?)

  1. Do you think that film posters are still needed as essential advertising for a film? Please give reasons.

I don't see film posters. There is nowhere I go on a regular basis which has those sort of hoardings up (except the rental shop). So, no they are not essential.

  1. Do you have any film posters? If so did you buy it because of the film, because you liked the poster design or both?
No (but dh does - I think he had them because he thought they made him look cool )

  2. Do you think modern film posters are more or less memorable than the illustrated film posters made before digital technology.
    No

  3. Which film poster, if any do you think is iconic?
Films are ephemera; that's almost anathema to iconic isn't it? (I may have got myself twisted up in long words though!) DH would say the poster for Pulp Fiction which was one of the ones he owned when he was being cool.

Please look at these Polish film posters

  1. Do you prefer the ?artiness? of Polish film posters to the classic photographic, digital images of modern UK and US film posters.
Yes I do - but do think that they are less likely to get people to go to see the film. They do require rather more thought and engagement than the posters we tend to get here. I suspect they would work better in UK as memorabilia, after the fact, rather than encouragement to see the film.

  2. Do you have or have you seen any film posters from other countries that you have really liked.
I'm afraid I can't remember, but I have seen the one for Crocodile Dundee before, and thought it was quite fun.

  3. Can you name a film poster from the last couple of years that you think is particularly memorable?
    No

  4. What was the last film you saw, a) what made you go to see it and b) can you remember the poster for the film?
Ice Age III. It was a treat for dd. Not sure I ever saw the poster. Or it might have been Coraline for the same reasons.

hebdenhedgehog · 15/12/2009 14:32

Rural

Trailer at the cinema, sometimes on TV, often read the book first

For the cinema yes, not really for elsewhere, unless somewhere really urban like a city where maybe comopeting for attention for peoples time / money

No, but do like some of them as 'art', but nowhere to put them. our local cinema sells off their old ones cheap but often tatty and a bit too large!

Not better / worse, just different.

Some of the hitchcock ones (Vertigo, Psycho), plus others too many to list! I like some of the late 60's type, such as Grand Prix, Le Mans, plus Pink Panther films, and some of the Italian posters from the 50s to 70s are fab!

Prefer? No, but I do like them. Differnt.

Italian, from 1950-1980

Umm, not really no. Possibly Pulp fiction was last one I can think oo off the top of my head!

Kids cartoon - can't remember the title (they all blur into one tbh). Pester-power provided the impetus!

The last 'adult' film I chose to see was probably Harry potter, but just as keeping up with the series. Otherwise the last film i saw I really enjoyed was Casino Royale, but that was down to having the cinema more or less to myself (so silent) and on my own (so no interruptions of 'what's going on', etc) and just really hooked into the film in a way I hadn't expected to!

Yes people expect to see them - they are often very cleverly done to catch your attention - often creating a bit of a popular stir even before peopple know what the film is about.

  1. Urban

  2. B

  3. Yes, sometimes a poster on a billboard can catch you eye & jolt your memory in a way a TV ad wouldn't.

4)No

5)Less

  1. The one that sprung to mind was Kill Bill.

  2. I liked the Ghandi one and the raging bull one, but overall I prefer the UK & US ones - but perhaps that's because we are exposed to them much more often.

8)No

  1. Sorry, they couldn't have been that attention grabbing - tbh it's more trailers than the poster that would make me see a movie, though they're good for piquing an interest to begin with.

  2. The last film I saw was A Christmas Carol. The children made me see it - and I think the poster was a man with ghosts around him? Thoough I wouldn't swear to it!!

UnquietDad · 22/12/2009 19:06
  1. Urban, but on the edge of rural.

  2. Could be any of the options depending on mood.

  3. Yes, to make people aware of a film's existence and associate a strong visual image with the title.

  4. Some from when I was a student - Dangerous Liaisons and some arty French ones. I bought them because I thought they'd look cool on my wall

  5. There are still both memorable and unmemorable film posters as there always were.

  6. Lots, but the ones that stick in my mind are Star Wars ep 1 (with the shadow of Anikin forming Darth Vader's shape - absolutely inspired, shame the film was so crap), Jaws, Pulp Fiction, probably loads of others...

  7. I don't personally prefer the "artiness" as pieces of advertising but I think they'd look great in a book and would probably even buy it.

  8. A few French ones: e.g. Nikita, Milou en Mai, etc. Generally got them because I liked the film and not for the image itself.

  9. Um, Cloverfield?.. I didn't go and see it though.

  10. St Trinian's 2. Yes, I can remember the poster I went to see it because it had David Tennant in but, more importantly, the delightful and awesome Sarah Harding.

c. trailer on the internet

f. Other advertising (such as?)

Out of those, c - I love trailers, but also f, as in reading features/articles in magazines or on the 'net

  1. Do you think that film posters are still needed as essential advertising for a film? Please give reasons.

Essential, I don't know. Useful yes definitely. We still use bill posters for other products, so I imagine they work pretty well and putting something out into the public consciousness.

  1. Do you have any film posters? If so did you buy it because of the film, because you liked the poster design or both? Not at the moment, but used to have a wall of postcards of film posters and in that case it was both.

  2. Do you think modern film posters are more or less memorable than the illustrated film posters made before digital technology.

Depends on the poster. Some of the old illustrated ones look quite tacky now, but I loathe the modern obviously photoshopped ones too!

  1. Which film poster, if any do you think is iconic?

Jaws, Pulp Fiction, Star Wars, new Star Trek one (love it!) Usual Suspects, Fight Club

Please look at these Polish film posters

  1. Do you prefer the ?artiness? of Polish film posters to the classic photographic, digital images of modern UK and US film posters.

Ooooooooooh I like some of those - they don't look like film posters though, they look like 60's dust jackets for books. It's what you're used to I suppose grabby hands for Raiders one

  1. Do you have or have you seen any film posters from other countries that you have really liked.

Haven't seen any I'm afraid.

  1. Can you name a film poster from the last couple of years that you think is particularly memorable?

Star Trek posters although I think that might not be the ones you mean?

  1. What was the last film you saw, a) what made you go to see it and b) can you remember the poster for the film?

has shame New Moon... Saw it because I liked the books, and my sister wanted to see it. The poster is a kind of threesomey one with Jacob inbetween Edward and Bella (if I was 14, I'd so have it on my wall!)
