Just realised I've bought rather a lot for dd.

Dont want her becoming too materialistic/spolit little madam.

Am I excessive and do I need to curb it?

How can we know unless you tell us what you've bought?!

And what I think is excessive might be considered parsimonious by others!

It's a highly personal thing. However, if you're worried, then you probably have bought too much. Can you keep some back for next year, or take anything back to the shop?

oldwoman · 09/12/2009 13:14

What do you mean by rather a lot and how old is she. Christmas is a time for indulgence so personally I wouldn't worry unless you have been excessive to the degree of a celeb!

minxofmancunia · 09/12/2009 13:16

hee hee! Have bought (big pressie) Little tikes outdoor playhouse

micro scooter

cinderella costume
dressing up shoes
2x art kit thingies
sparkly magic wand
several books

She's 3

That seems OK to me. Why do you think it's excessive?

Seona1973 · 09/12/2009 13:19

doesn't sound too over the top to me. won't tell you what dh has bought my 3 year old!!

Ewe · 09/12/2009 13:19

I think that's fine tbh. It's a lot money wise but she of course won't realise this, number of gifts isn't excessive and as long as you can afford it cost doesn't matter so much at 3!

Gipfeli · 09/12/2009 13:19

Well books don't count as you can never over-indulge with books imo. Also art kits too because.

So that just leaves a playhouse, scooter and some dressingup things.

That's more than we're giving our 3 yr old, by about a scooter's worth but in our case dd is already seriously spoiled by her grandparents anyway.

I don't think it's too bad.

minxofmancunia · 09/12/2009 13:20

the amount of cash that's gone out of the account!

i think it's the playhouse and the scooter tbh, prob should have gone for one or the other....

I'd keep it all, she'll have a lovely time.

I would recommend letting her open things perhaps over a few days otherwise you can find at that age if they get loads of things all at the same time, they pick their favourite and don't pay as much attention to the rest as they would have done ordinarily.

minxofmancunia · 09/12/2009 13:22

also know she'll get copious amounts of crap lovely thoughtful presents from gps and uncle/auntie!

Carry on regardless and just charity shop anything inappropriate

leamac · 09/12/2009 16:11

it really depends how much material things they get throughout the year

my 4 kids get no toys bought unless its for birthdays or christmas when I spoil them

morethanyoubargainfor · 09/12/2009 16:27

my ds 7 list of his desires has five things on it, however the presents i have bought are more like 25 . (mainly small things)

He is an only child and i love to spoil him abit at christmas and birthdays and all the other days of the year i think why not.
he is not a brat and never demands anything.

I dont think your list is OTT and she will have such a great time an so will you seeing her open everything and be so excited.

They are only little once make the most of it.

morethanyoubargainfor · 09/12/2009 16:27

oh sugar why doesn't that strike out work for me!

MrsBadger · 09/12/2009 16:32

you have to strike out one word at a time like this

re the OP, agree it doesn;t sound too mad (have read some eye-popping threads re Wiis etc)

but tbh I would think about putting away the books and art kits and getting them out as emergency nothing presents later in the year when the weather is shocking and everyone is cross.

Nemofish · 09/12/2009 20:34

I think spoiling at Xmas is fine, it's when dc's get bought things every trip out to the shops, every weekend, or get everything they ever ask for, especially if there is a long discussion re: ooh ds that costs a lot of money, you will have to save up for it blah blah and then it gets bought for them the next day, grrr...

CarGirl · 09/12/2009 20:41

with things like the play house & scooter they are very age restrictive, she will play with them a lot for the next couple of years so best to get them and give them now (then sell them on and recoup some of the cash!)
