Sleep training 'clocks' - do they work?

Was thinking of getting DD (3) one of those clocks where they change from day to night, so that the child knows when it is time to go to bed/get up?
I have seen some pretty bad reviews on Amazon for them, but a few of my friends think they are good.
Any views?

we just use a digital clock for ds (just turned 3)and he can come through when it says 7:00. We used fairy lights on a timer for dd when she was around 2 1/2 and they worked ok (and were a bit cheaper than the training clocks)

Ditto on the digital clock. DS is 3.7 and wakes up at silly o'clock (before 6) so now he knows not to come in to our room if his clock doesn't say 6 or 7 at the beginning... since buying him the clock 2 weeks ago we've had one morning of a 5.45 wake up and the rest have been civilised times! can't think why I didn't do it before...

a friend used the bunny clock for her dd and it worked. She must've been 3 I think.

At 3, I'd just get a digital clock too - DS knows that you don't get up before it starts with 7 on the clock.

He does have a bunny clock (not the pop up one, the light one), and it did the job great, and continues to, but we did have to solder it back together internally, and it's a pain to reset if turned off. Oh, and DS could make bunny wake up within 10 minutes of getting it

kingfix · 07/12/2009 12:35

it's half worked for us. Dd doesn't call out till the rabbit wakes up...provided the clock is not set for later than 6.40 or so.
We have the analogue one with the ears that pop up and it's fragile and unrealiable so would go with the digital version.

Bunny alarm clock worked a treat for us - dd understood easily that rabbit asleep (ears down, eyes shut) meant that she should be in bed, rabbit awake = time to get up.

We got it when she was about 2.8 and it totally solved the problem of her waking up in the middle of the night & calling out "is it morning time" (she also had a torch to use if needed to see the rabbit). I think it only works if your dc wants to go along with it, and is only struggling with knowing whether or not its time to get up, IYSWIM.

BTW our first bunny clock died after about 10 months or so, we got in touch with the company & they sent us a replacement with no quibble at all, its still going strong now that dd is 7 (and needs two loud alarms - one out of reach of the bed - followed by a call from us to get her out of bed by 7.30 on school days )

ImSoNotTelling · 07/12/2009 12:41

we got this one on recommendation from a friend when DD was 2 and it works a treat

ImSoNotTelling · 07/12/2009 12:41

Is pretty flimsy though we keep it up on a shelf out of reach

shinybaubles · 07/12/2009 15:57

We had several designed for children and they were all crap..I then bought a Philips energy light and that has birds tweeting as an alarm or the sunrise effect. We use the birds and ds is perfect he stays in his bed until the birds sing at 7.30 on weekdays and 8 or 8.30 at the weekends - bliss. He is 3.9.

Undercovamutha · 07/12/2009 17:09

Thanks for the advice.

I have found this one.

It is quite expensive but am hoping it will be multipurpose and okay to pass on to DS in a few years!

We got the bunny clock. It was shit. My DS1 worked out how to reset it the second or third night. Shortly after that it broke when he was manhandling it. He wasn't that rough either. Waste of money.

After that I wasn't prepared to shell out another £20 plus on another one.

NightShoe · 08/12/2009 14:09

It didn't work for us, we got it when DD was 2.5 and she worked out how to make it wake up before we had even used it the first night. It was a total waste of money.

We now use a lamp on a timer. If the light is on, it is morning. This works very well and only cost £2.99.
