PGCE interview - advice please!

Hi I have an interview for a primary PGCE. I have an English degree and have volunteered in a primary school for 8 weeks now.

I have a maths test and a presentation to do and I feel really really stuck about the presentation. It can be a presentation on anything (examples in my letter are making jam, building a paper aeroplane, about a trip you have been on - so literally anything). I currently work in healthcare so thought about something like that, hmmmm.

Also eeeeks at maths test! What do I need to revise??

Cheers x

Is the idea that the presentation should be aimed at KS1/2 or for adults?!

Adults, its to other students and the interviewers (obv!). They said the subject doesn't matter so much as how you communicate. But I think I will communicate better if its a good subject.

I can't use a computer but I can use props and probably will.

Well, that's what I mean really... are you demonstrating your adult to adult comms skills or adult to child?

It's just that you say they suggest 'making planes' or 'jam' as subjects, which seem a little 'child focused' iyswim.

It would appear you need to demonstrate the ability to explain concepts with enthsuaism but attention to detail in a concise manner as you would when front of class teaching. So, this might naturally be easier with a subject matter that kids would engage well with...

The maths part terrified me when I trained as a teacher. Eeek indeed!

I don't know, I think adult to adult (in that the presentation has to target an adult audience and not show adults what you would teach a child). I think the examples are simple to make it clear that the presentation does not have to be complex!

My interview is tomorrow, does anyone have any last minute advice?

Best of luck!

What are you doing your presentation on?

mumblecrumble · 14/12/2009 22:53

I was asked the folowing at PGCE interveiw (though was secondary)

  • When did you realise you wanted to be in Education?
  • How did you decide what keystage to teach at
  • Give an example of when yu taught someone something

In your answers, try to refer to some personal experience. Remain calm and take your time, be enthusiastic ans natural.

Smile, pause, eye contact, question the people you are presenting to (or even get them to 'do' something IYSWIM), rather than just talking 'at' them, make it fun- it will go a long way.

And good luck

Hi it went ok I think (cautious!)

Presentation was on handwashing. We all did it together to practice
