What one album should every budding guitar player own?

My 9 year old has clearly 'got it going on' with his electrtic guitar. He's really great on it. I want to get him inspired with guitar music but I've always been more of a jazz/house type of person.

I've got some really old stuff for him like Pink Floyd, Led Zep, Hendrix, Nirvana.

Sorry no classical thank you sweetly.

Eric Clapton and dare I say it....

Dire Straits (who I love, there I said it)
Telegraph Road, Private Investigations etc should inspire the budding guitarist in him.

mollyroger · 27/11/2009 20:19

Hendrix, of course!

Though my Guitar-worshipping ds loves guns and roses too.

Bert Jansch is the guitar-player's artist...

anji

or davy Graham

or Richard Thompson

Spidermama · 27/11/2009 20:27

I think we can all relax about liking Dire Staights these days Montifer can't we? Enough time has past. Doesn't our age mean we'll never be cool again anyway? There's a certain freedom in that.

Wow Molly I haven't heard of any of them. I will investigate.

DH says - Stevie Vai, Passion and Warfare; Appetite for Destruction, Guns and Roses; 4 Symbols, Led Zep; Metallica, Metallica; something by Van Halen and a best of Queen

mollyroger · 27/11/2009 20:31

Spidey, ds (11) is a gothy metal-head. I am a more folkie/hippy. (With an upbringing of rock!)
We have everything here

PavlovtheForgetfulCat · 27/11/2009 20:32

My builder would say Dire Straits too. He is a huge fan and owns lots of guitars, including one of the guitars on 'brothers in arms'. Not my bag really but still...

REM
Foofighters, not too difficult, great rifts.

southeastastra · 27/11/2009 20:36

probably aerosmith too, get your wings - something like that, blusey

Lionstar · 27/11/2009 20:40

DP says:

AC/DC - Highway to Hell
Green Day - American Idiot
Oasis - (What's the Story) Morning Glory?

Avoid any Rolling Stones, as it's all funny tunings

slushy06 · 28/11/2009 12:48

Big rock fan here also play a bit of guitar only problem is I learned on a left handed and I am right

Def guns and roses some really good solo's

Chilli peppers do some easy to learn ones that sound real good.

Nickelback do quite a lot of hard ones.

Metallica another definite.

System of the down have a really unique sound would be handy to learn.

Also pink her guitarist unlike others involves simple notes but encourages a good strum which a good guitarist needs both.

Green day, offspring, sum41, evanescence, Blink 182, Bowling for soup, nirvana, slipknot, korn. personally not a fan of Hendrix think style is now dated but good to learn.

Spidermama · 28/11/2009 13:08

DS doesn't like Hendrix either. He says he can appreciate the talent but doesn't get on with the style.

There are a few Air Guitar type compilations out there with lots of tracks with great guitar bits on. Or would you prefer specific bands?

NorbertDentressangle · 28/11/2009 13:12

Air Guitar CDs -even if you just look at their track listings it would give you a few ideas maybe?

Spidermama · 28/11/2009 13:16

Oh they're great Norbert. Thanks.

I would also work out what type of rock he likes and work with those first.
Hard rock
Heavy metal
Alternate metal
Punk rock
Rap rock
Industrial
Grunge
Ballads
There are more but these are the main ones.

Spidermama · 29/11/2009 08:37

What's rap rock? He certainly likes hip hop. He also really loves Chipmunk who does kind of ska type music as far as I can tell.

He's not really into grunge type stuff and clearly prefers stuff with rhythm (for which I am grateful) but he's open minded and will listen to anything you throw at him so it's a good time to educate him in the history of great guitar music.

slushy06 · 29/11/2009 15:09

Well I always consider it to be like hip hop only harder e.g Hip hop can be Gwen stefani or Black eyed peas. Where as rap rock is more Eminem and Dr Dre.

Spidermama · 29/11/2009 15:32

Sounds perfect.

this is a pretty comprehensive list here and fun to argue over!

bellavita · 29/11/2009 16:40

Guns n Roses, Green Day....

bellavita · 29/11/2009 16:42

Ah I see Slushy has already mentioned those..

DS1 plays electric guitar and he loves those bands.

CMOTdibbler · 29/11/2009 20:43

I forgot one of my favourite guitarists of all time - Jeff Healey. His first album 'See the light' is just amazing. Fabulous sound, and good as an example of unconventional playing (he played flat on his lap, partly as he was blind)

slushy06 · 30/11/2009 14:13

This place has tabs for nearly every song I use it might be worth your ds having a look here
