What sort of information are you looking for? 'Play' is a very overarching term!

what kind of information?

for parents, to help them play productively with their children?
research about how parents play?
or about parents' attitude to play?

you might need to be a bit more specific!

What I would really like to know is where do new parents get information on enhancing their childs (6mths - 4 yrs) development through play. Nurseries, childminders, play schools etc use The Early Years Foundation Stage Principles as a guide but what about parents - is their a website they could visit.

Parents can use EYFS as guidance.

I think most parents find it comes naturally, responding to their child's interests and the toys they find in shops. Otherwise google is your friend!

Here has some nice gentle guidance without jargon explaining play. here has fantastic craft activities. this site has good ideas for babies...and these are just a few that I have bookmarked!

Some other nice ideas are a treasure basket filled with natural objects or things from around the home such as a wooden spoon, a plastic beaker, some scraps of material etc that a child can explore, messy play with cornflour and water, plain water, bubbles or playdough.

If you're 'serious' about learning about play this book is very good and I use it as a childcare professional.

If you look through this site then there are also play ideas.

There's no one set place to find out about play but if you're concerned then there's information out there. Having said that, the best resource for your baby is you: talking, singing, helping them move.

Is there anything in particular you wanted to know about or was it more of a general enquiry? For example if you wanted to know how to encourage your baby to crawl you could post a question here and a bunch of people would be happy to give you the benefit of their experience! My top tip for that would be placing a toy just out of reach and encouraging the baby to reach for it but other people will have different views.

I hope that helps a bit.

Just remembered something else I meant to say. You may also find a book on child development helpful such as Carolyn Meggitt's book or Birth to Five.

not much help for babies, but once they hit 2.5 or 3 you need 'Play with a Purpose for Under 7s' - out of print but fab and there are always some on ebay eg here

Just checked my bookshelf and I have the 'What to Expect' books have good, basic suggestions.

How much detail are you after?

Following on from my recent research, thanks for all your useful info. Can anyone tell me what they do with their own kids - structured and unstructured, indoors and outdoors.

Many thanks
