Washing BumGenies Nappies

I have been using Bumgenius nappies for about 2 months now, and have started to notice that the inserts have gone a bit yellowy, and have a slight smell (not of ammonia, more like honey - odd!). I wash the nappies and the inserts together (but take the inserts out of the pocket). I do a cold wash with a small amount of non-bio organic washing liquid, then a 60 degree wash with slightly more liquid, then an extra rinse. Could I use Napisan every now and then to freshen up the inserts (and nappies too???), followed by a couple of good rinses??

BG site says to use bleach once a month, but I don't fancy that idea.

I think the smell might be also due to using a different washing machine at the mo as mine on the blink. On mine I have intensive rinse cycle, but on the stand-in it is just normal - maybe it's not rinsing all the liquid off???

Also, before I stopped using my machine, I found little grease marks on my nappies which I can't get off. Has anyone got any suggestions?

Grease marks on clothes can be a sign that the bearings are going in your washing machine.

I have heard that microfibre nappies tend to retain smells more than natural fibre ones. I would try washing with powder and some form of nappy sanitiser, and then rinsing lots until there are no suds.

Good Luck.

Thanks for the advice. The washing machine is due for repair, waiting on the part. It is only 6 months old so still under guarantee, but it shouldn't really be breaking down so soon.

Will have a go with some Napisan then and lots of rinsing.

I would strip wash them with no detergent at all. My washing machine did that grease thing just before it conked out!

Yellow stain remaining when clean after washing can be removed by putting the nappies (wet or dry) on a windowsill; the sunlight will remove the stain. Just like how you get turmeric stains out of clothes.

Success! I double rinsed the nappies after washing and the smell has now gone! I hung the inserts on the line in the sun and the yellow colour has gone - amazing and simple!! Thanks!

I'm kind of hijacking this thread but it does relate to washing the Bumgenius.

Which setting do you use to tumble dry the nappies and inserts?

LO is due in Feb and I will not be able to line dry them for a while.

Many thanks

I did the bleach thing this week to ALL my BG nappies.

A bit worried that I might have buggered up the whole stash, as yesterday it started leaking quite soon after putting it on DS1.

When I took it off, the wee was in a pool inside the nappy, it didn't get through the suedecloth to be absorbed by the microfibre pad.

Anyone with advice?
