DD is 5. she has just started to notice differences in people, and commenting on it.
mostly its just, oh look mummy that lady has red hair/a beard/ nice shoes.

But whats causing problems is the fact that she has started to notice race. She isn't making any judgments or saying anything derogatory but she is mentioning face colour in almost every sentance.

"mummy you know xx at school? Tha brown boy....." "mummy that brown man just looked at me" etc etc

Its really quite embarrassing. Im currently doing the ignore in the hopes it'll pass strategy but im not sure if thats t he best way.

WWYD??

DS usually comments about people in wheelchairs, buddhist monks, people with one arm etc....my saying for this type of occasion is "Yes dear everyone is different. Wouldn't it boring if we were all the same". He is 6 now and that still covers it.

He did describe a girl in his class as the brown girl with big hair. I said "Yes, isn't she pretty"

DC do notice differences. I just try to make him see that differences are positives.

Do I make sense ?? Sorry if I don't.

my dd 4 almost 5 has one boy in her class who is brown and she has asked about him. I have said that we all have different colour skin, I've answered any questions and basically said we're all the same inside but we are all different on the outside so we can tell each other apart.

She seems to accept that as long as it doesn't hurt it's normal.

she's not asking questions as such, she just feels the need to mention the skin colour whenever she has an excuse. `

Im just worried she'll say it and end up causing someone offence.
