DD just don't seem to be settling at night and often 9.30-10 and she still awake, then I'm having to wake her for school in the morning. By the end of the week she looks so tried.

We have a long wind down with a bath and I read to her before she reads her own book. In bed by 8 and lights off 8.30. She's very good and stays in bed. I don't normally know she awake till out the blue mum I can't get to sleep or she gets up for a drink or the toilet.

Am I putting her to bed to early should I change her bed time to later or is her bedtime about the norm for her age.

My DS is nearly 8 and goes to bed at 7.30, asleep by 8. However he is usually up by 6am on the dot! Both my DC are very affected by the clocks going backwards and forwards, so before the clocks went back, DS was going to bed at 8.30 and sleeping to 7ish. I would say your DD's bedtime is about average for her age tho' and my DS's earlier than usual.

My8 year old theoretically goes to bed at 8 and lights out at 8.30. Often slips by half an hour though.

I'd say much earlier than 8.30 for an 8 year old. My nearly 12 year old goes at 8.45 or earlier. When he was 8 it was 7pm with 15 minutes reading time.
I wouldn't let the fact that she doesn't go to sleep influence the bedtime. She clearly needs more sleep if you have to wake her.

My dd 8.6 goes to bed at 7.30 reads for 30 minutes and lights out just as the one show starts at 8. She gets up at 6.45 although it's generally closer to 7 by the time I've managed to winkle her out of bed. she really needs her sleep and is a foul beast unpleasant if she doesn't get enough. She too is affected by the clock changing thing and on top of that, being in central Switzerland, we are an hour ahead of England and when cbbc people say 'on at 7.30' or whatever the time is, she thinks she's being diddled out of staying up time.

My DS1 is just 9. We start the routine with his younger brother around 7 - ish , but we aim for him to be in bed at 8pm, he is usually asleep by 8.30. He used to be a very early riser, but in the last few months he's up at 6.45 ish

Goblinchild · 19/11/2009 17:39

lexcat, how active is she?
Average bedtime for most Y3 or 4 is some time between 7.30 and 8.30 in my neck of the woods.

Ingles2 · 19/11/2009 17:43

lights out at 8.30-8.45 for both my 8.5 and 10.1.
There's no way I can manage earlier with sports, clubs and homework.

missismac · 19/11/2009 17:57

Yes, I'm with Ingles2, DS3 (6) 7.30pm (but really more like 8pm) then DS2 (9) at 8.30pm (ish) - they're both up naturally about 6-7am. Works for us - at the moment.

DD goes to bed at 9, but can stay up if she's not tired and there's something she wants to watch on TV, or she will go, voluntarily, earlier if she's tired. She's pretty good at regulating her own bedtime.

On the weekend she can go whenever she likes if we're not doing anything the next day.
She will go anytime between 10 and 1ish.

She's up by 7.30 on a school day.

Thank for everyone's feedback seem like a good time for her age.

Just wondered as she has had that bedtime for some time now. She use to go to bed a 8.00 till she started to get up at 5.30-6.00, so I moved she bedtime till 8.30 and she wouldn't get up till after 7.

8.30 worked well for us so far it just a more resent thing her just not getting to sleep.

Mine goes up 8:30ish and lights out by 9 - she can have an extra hour on the weekend !
No way we could do any earlier with evening activities!

Mandy1966 · 23/11/2009 12:53

My 8.2yr old goes to straight to bed at 8pm school nights, slightly later and school holidays.
My 11.2 yr old goes up at 8.80 reads till 9pm,
same as his brother weekends and school hols

If they went any later, I would have no time for me an hubbie.

Fruitysunshine · 23/11/2009 12:55

My DD just turned 9 at the weekend. Her usual bedtime is 8.30pm on the dot and she wanted a slightly later bedtime for her 9th birthday! We tried it 2 nights and she could not get up in the morning. It is amazing what half an hours difference does when they really need sleep! Anyway we are sticking to the 8.30pm time as she needs the extra time.

LilyBolero · 23/11/2009 12:59

Ds1 is 8, and although I try to have him in bed sometime between 8 and 8.30, it's often more like 9 o'clock.

The time he goes to bed however has NO bearing on what time he goes to sleep - it is often 10.30 or 11 before he gets to sleep.

He is a very busy, very active kid, but has never needed much sleep!
