Bewildered by choice and considering terry squares

Advice needed kind people

I have

  • a totsbots wrap,
  • a totsbots flexitots nappy size one that I've used a few times and seems snug though has not yet been poo-tested,
  • a bambinex bamboo nappy size 1 which seems well-fitting, mega absorbent and soft but also takes at least 24 hours to dry
  • a pop-in dream-dri nappy that I was convinced would be wonderful but tends to leak round the legs
(think I have got all the names right - they are all confusingly similar)

Feel a bit reluctant to buy a large set of the flexitots though as ds is 12 weeks and 13+ lb, and they are sized for up to 18lb so I think I'd only get a few months use from them. Bambinex I think are up to 22lb, but I'd have to buy extra and have lots hanging damply round the flat as they take so long to dry.

I read somewhere that bamboo terry squares dry more quickly, and are slim fitting, but I want something that's simple for me, dh and anyone looking after him to use. I looked on the Nappy Lady website and there are about 20 different ways of folding them listed... Help!

Does anyone out there have any advice on how to use squares (or a shaped nappy that would solve all my problems)?

Squares are dead easy. There are half a million ways to fold them but you quickly work out what fits your baby best and then just each people that. A lot of the folds can also be folded in advance and the nappy popped in the change bag rady folded for other people to use (also useful if going out anyway as there doesn't tend to be space to fold it in changing facilities.

I used the bat fold on them when little and now tend to use the kite fold. The poo catcher is quite good for toddlers as it is nice and slim between the legs.

I like bright bots squares and motherease wraps.

bat

kite

Pretty much all you need. IMO stuff like this is slightly insane!

Wow, thanks for fast response. I also wanted to add that he tends to save up poo for a couple of days and then do something a bit (runny bf poo) - is there a special fold for that?

a good bf poo explosion leaks out of most things! With pretty much any fold you can tuck the nappy edges in around the leg which helps a lot but the nice thing with a 2 part nappy is that if poo escapes the nappy the wrap catches it 99% of the time.

If you like the FlexiTot, the size 2 has poppers down the front to reduce the height for a smaller baby and bamboo short pile terry inner.(most recent version - check as some sellers still have the old version with bamboo velour inner)
I'd think this would suit as you could popper it down to fit him, and should last to potty training.

If you go for terry squares, do make sure you buy reasonable quality ones eg Bright Bots, Twinkle Terries or bamboo terries, as many of the cheaper brands eg high street ones are quiter thin.

I use the Bat, for tinies, the kite for bigger boys, ad the triangle for bigger girls. They are all pretty easy obce you've practised a bit, and IMO the most efficient system there is! Use a double one for nights - just doubleup, and fold as you would for one nappy.

Definitely bamboo rather than terry though - it's much slimmer fitting, and drying for a single layer isn't a lot different from a good quality terry one.

For squares I used bat, then kite and now pad with wings now that he is too big for them to go round him any other way.

I've gone off bamboo, I must admit. Yes they do stay soft for longer but then they seem to suddenly wear out and go threadbare (nb I am talking about after 3 years of continuous use!)whereas the terry ones are in much the same condition as they were after 10 washes.

At the moment my favourite nappies on ds are the bumble and tots organic cotton (both nippa fastening). They have both fitted him well for over a year now. The organic cotton dries quite quickly too.

Thanks all!

DS currently in bamboo square nappy (bat fold). Required quite careful origami since the two I bought are only 50cm square, but he looked sooo cute in it and it was really trim. I think I'll buy some more, larger ones.

No idea how they'll cope with the 2 or 3 day worth of poo explosions, but hey...

Def buy large ones, they will last to potty training that way and they don't look too bulky on them for long!

Squares a good cheap option that covers most situations - glad to hear they are working out for you. We're still using muslins (at 7 weeks) boosted with a bamboo liner and ME airflow wrap. Also use a Bambinex bamboo nappy overnight - I got the size 2 ones for DD and they are fine for (large) newborn DS if I fold the top down. The Bambinex have been my faves for ages cos simple to use, absorb well and fit lots of sizes using nippas - do take ages to dry, but can live with that.

Might go for some bamboo squares as he gets bigger and the muslins get overwhelmed! Anyone know of any good deals on them?
