Are you having an OVER conversation with yourself now?

Iklboo · 12/11/2009 14:18

My mother offers a running commentary of what's happening on the TV to DS. DS is not remotely interested

'Oh look he's opening the door. He's seen the mouse. He's chasing him! The mouse is on the table...'

We really need to model out emoticon on the look he gives her

Oh God I was doing that yesterday. In my defence it's the only way to get DD round the farking shops without a tantrum. I did stop yesterday and really heard myself. And cringed

Hassled · 12/11/2009 14:18

Now I do that constantly as a cover for the fact I have no idea what the DCs are saying because I'm paying no attention to them. I repeat the last words or phrase in a vaguely enthusiastic manner and they're fooled.

The mum in town was thinking about ways to escape.

traceybath · 12/11/2009 14:19

Lordy - am sure I do this but to be fair he's not that interested in what colour nail varnish I should buy or whether Coleen Rooney should have gone out so quickly post-birth.

Realised I was doing loud parenting in Dr's this morning - its just so easy to do.

InterruptingKid · 12/11/2009 14:20

i htink i just hate parenting

Othersideofthechannel · 12/11/2009 14:24

I used to do this.

For some reason for many years DS didn't seem to realise we had heard unless we repeated what he said. So we repeated otherwise he was like a stuck record!

InterruptingKid · 12/11/2009 14:25

ohg od how tiresome for everyone you

OP posts:
bintofbohemia · 12/11/2009 14:28

My son repeats the same word/phrase over and over until you repeat it, (and sometimes continues anyway) so am probably heard doing the same thing myself to get him to shut up.

NancyBotwin · 12/11/2009 14:38

Yes one of my ds's would repeat something ad nauseum until we said it back. Thankfully he grew out of it, though he will sometimes revert if he thinks he doesn't have my undivided attention (which obv never happens!)

IMoveTheStarsForNoOne · 12/11/2009 14:46

Oh god, I do this..
DS is just starting to talk though, and I do it at home and I forget not to when I'm out.

Oops

ahundredtimes · 12/11/2009 14:52

Oh god that's familiar. An easy trap to fall into, I too thought I had to talk to them, I mean, I thought we had to have conversations with two year olds. Ours went like this

'that car is blue'
'yes, it's blue'
'it's a car'
'yes, correct, excellent observation'
'a blue car'
'yes, you've said that. So have you read any good books lately?'
'it was NOT a green car'
'Or films? Any good films?'
'It was a BLUE car. I saw it.'

InterruptingKid · 12/11/2009 14:55

but the kid had seen a adult woman dressed upas a turkey in marks and spencer so maybe fair dos

OP posts:
ahundredtimes · 12/11/2009 14:58

' a lady is being a turkey'
'a turkey yes'
'that lady'
'lady, yes'
'she's a turkey'
'that's right, a turkey'

god, you've GOT to have compassion for her you old cow. I need to go and lie down just thinking about those 'conversations'

GhoulsAreLoud · 12/11/2009 15:00

Does anyone know where the loud parenting thread is?

I saw a fine example of it in Starbuck's at the weekend and wanted to send DH the thread as he was ready to strangle the woman in action.

InterruptingKid · 12/11/2009 15:00

GhoulsAreLoud · 12/11/2009 15:16

Thanks anyway IK, I can't find it either for some reason.

GhoulsAreLoud · 12/11/2009 15:16

Musta been in chat...

FlamingoBingo · 12/11/2009 15:24

Um....isn't it parents who like and actually want to engage with their children who do this?

How the hell do children learn to talk if they don't have conversations? Yes, it's bloody boring and monotonous, but would you be rude enough to blatantly ignore and adult who's conversation you found boring? If so, then , but if not, then why do it to children? They're people too, you know!

I bloody hate 'I hate it when I see people doing good parenting' threads.

FlamingoBingo · 12/11/2009 15:25

Or maybe it's 'I hate seeing good parents because it reminds me what a shit one I am myself so must slag them off to make myself feel better'....?
