Children's haircut

FATHER4000 · 31/05/2003 09:04

My 2 children have both got blonde hair and I was wondering what sort of style to give them. I was thinking of doing a Bowl cut and I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on how to cut their hair.

ANY TIPS ARE WELCOME.

We've got 2 boys aged 4 and very nearly 2 and a pair of clippers on a long setting suits them fine.......infact as time has gone on the setting has got shorter and shorter. I cut DH's hair with them too saving £££££'s on hairdresser bills on all three of them.

EmmaTMG · 31/05/2003 09:36

Oppps forgot to add that both of them (DS's) also have quite fair hair and cutting it with clippers wasn't too drastic, it grows sooooo fast that even if you think it's too short it will soon need cutting again.

My ds is nearly two and I do his (and dh) with clippers, mine are el cheapo and only go up to 1 inch but some go longer. I am experimenting now so dh and ds have a no 6 up the sides and no 8 on top! 12 quid for clippers, loads saved so far. God help me for confessing this I had to pay £8 for dd to get her hair cut! I can not believe it but it had to be done. I do her fringe and am toying with doing the rest myself but am a bit worried about the almighty cock up I might make.

That was a unhappy smiley face, didn't preview before posting! How about this?

Tortington · 31/05/2003 19:02

shave it on a number 6

runragged · 31/05/2003 20:44

I can't do that dh would be horrified. Might solve the problems of nits though!

codswallop · 31/05/2003 20:53

Oh take them to the hairdressers poor things.

Ghosty · 31/05/2003 21:14

Father4000 ... you are not really serious about a bowl are you??
I will never cut my boy's hair ... not like that anyway. Seeing what my mum did to my brothers in the '70s was just too cruel!!!!
I take DS to the barbers ... cheaper than a hairdresser ... and they clip it. More recently
DH had a go with his clippers and didn't do a bad job ...

Hoorah for Ghosty - the southern Hemispheres Mrs sensible
You can always tell when parents cut hair

Not mine codswallop I am brilliant at it of course!

I take ds to my hairdresser. She has a toddler herself, so know how to deal with the squirming about etc (although I find administering a steady stream of Grapes or Smarties while the operation is being carried out helps).

IMO hairdressing is a professional skill, and should be regarded as such.

I personally don't like little boys with clipped short hair. I know it's practical, but tends to make them look like thugs. Mine at 3.5 is a little thug, but I don't want to advertise the fact.

codswallop · 02/06/2003 14:14

Black children(well , boys) look nice with cropped hair as they have lovely shades of skin underneath - white/pink not so nice IMO)

motherinferior · 02/06/2003 14:17

My dd has incredible wild curls and I daren't touch them apart from occasional cack-handed attempt at her fringe. I'd say blow the money on the haidresser!

runragged · 02/06/2003 18:54

I do my ds on an inch setting it looks really cute. I agree that children shouldn't look like thugs but that doesn't always happen when you clip it. Having said that I did cut my friends ds's hair with her permission I stress and I was doing it on the long setting but it didn't seem to make any difference, so I did it a bit shorter but it still didn't make any difference so I did it a bit shorter (no4) and all of a sudden all of his hair disappearred!!!!! It's grown back now and I've touch up the sides and it is really smart even if I do say so myself.

badjelly · 03/06/2003 11:19

anything but with a bowl!!!

myopicmuppett · 04/06/2003 14:25

if your not sure then dont do it!!! i thought i could do it after years of watching my haidresser cut my 7 year olds hair, so borrowed grandpa's hair clippers last week end cut T's hair on number 4 (and grandpa's but he was ok and would love to be bald to make his life easier!), my little boy ran into the bathroom looked at his hair and burst into tears!!! he cried uncontrollably and begged me to return his fringe, which, by now was in the bin with grandpa's and couldnt be put back anyway! he wore a baseball hat all last week and is only just recovering his confidence and self esteem now!!! don't do it, children are people too, how would you like yours cutting with a basin for a template!!!!

Claireandrich · 04/06/2003 21:46

DD is having her first hair cut at 4pm tomorrow evening. She is 14 months. Her hair isn't long really but her fringe is in her eyes a bit and the back could do with a trim to thicken it up a bit. I am taking her to MIL's hairdresser though as I couldn't even think of attempting myself. No idea how much it will cost yet either. Dreading it as I am not convinced DD will sit still long enough - oh well, we will see.

codswallop · 04/06/2003 21:49

I think this was a ruse - no response from him see?

VidalSassoon · 04/06/2003 21:55

Oooh no! Don't use a bowl, that is just SO 1970s. For the child of the noughties, I prefer to use a bucket. Keep it low over the ears, slanted high on the fringe and low at the back. Simply gorgeous.
