DS1 has been asking for a drumkit for six months. Bad idea?

Specifically, he wants a spongebob squarepants drumkit.

We do not live alone in the woods.

DS1 wanted one of these last year - so we got him one for his 4th birthday..... he put the stick through the skin on the first day!!!

I play the drums myself, so I would obv say its a good idea.....

To be honest though, my DS played for all of a few seconds at any one time, so its not as bad as it seems!

Will watch with interest as a drumkit is on DS's wishlist.

We do at least live in a detached house but even so, his bedroom is still attached to the rest of our house!

Yesterday in Ikea he was drumming on the saucepans, the plant pots...anything he could find.

He's 5 -how old is your DS?

It would be for his seventh birthday.

It's a terrace! Though at least it would be in the extension IYSWIM so in a room that sticks out and isn't in direct contact with next doors' walls.

DH seems determined to get them for him as he used to play in a band in his youth and I think the only reason he agreed to having children was so he could grow his own rock band.

personally I'm turning a deaf ear. Dd wants to learn drum and she keeps banging on about it, but we aren't going there

Our DS is a bigstyle drummer, he's only 2.5 and has a set, he doesn't play it often and we live in an apartment. Still, our downstairs neighbour must be thankful we're moving out this week!

Mine always wanted one-we eventually gave in when he was 15yrs.

Well at the risk of being a wet blanket I think two things :

a. He may not play them very much after the first flush unless you start him on lessons
And in that case why not get a "proper" kit that he can build on rather than a character kit that he will go off in a year or two.

b. It's possibly a bit much for the neighbours if it's a terrace...

If he's 7, I think he's already too old for a character set as the quality of them tends to be rubbish! Although I have to admit I haven't seen the Spongebob one specifically so it might be better. If your dh played in a band, I think both he and your son will be disappointed with the sound which comes from the toy ones. Do you have a music shop nearby where you could hire a drum kit? When our ds wanted to have a drum kit, we bought him a term of lessons and hired the kit from the shop for 60 pounds, which was refundable at the end of the period if you decided to buy a drum kit from them. It did end up costing us that 60 pounds however as ds was so keen that we ended up buying him a full-size 2nd hand kit at the end of the 6 months. Couple of years on, he's about to do his Grade 4 exams and has formed his own band (aged 10!).

Mine badgered me for a drum kit for years. I finally relented when they were about 10 & 12 & I realised that if I didn't they would hold it against me for life. Fortunately they largely lost interest after about 6 months. I may try & sell it on this year as it's taking up space I could use.
