Anyone done AA316 19th C Novel or AA363 Advanced Creative Writing?

I signed up for both of these on Friday as my offer of an MA place was withdrawn at the last minute because the university didn't tell me that they needed the results of my last two OU courses which I won't have until December. Grrr. I can have a place next year, which I will keep as insurance though I really hope to get a place on a PGCE course next year.
So in order to keep my brain active and because they sound interesting I have signed up for the two courses above and am wondering whether anyone else on here has done or is doing them?

Hi, only just seen this thread. I did 19thC novel last year and thoroughly enjoyed it. There is a lot of reading though, so I'd get cracking on Dombey and Son or Middlemarch (you don't need to study both really) as soon as possible. If you have any specific questions then feel free to ask away!

I taught AA316 a few years ago. IMO it is a cracking course with a good range of C19 novels. As MissGB says, get started early on the reading; it'll take a while. And likewise, ask anything you like if I can help.

Thanks guys. Luckily I have read Middlemarch many times, and as I am not a big Dickens fan I will be concentrating on that for TMA questions and exam. I surprised myself by doing my first TMA on Jane Eyre, when I initially intended to go for Northanger Abbey, which I knew well, but I so enjoyed studying Jane Eyre that I wanted to write an essay on it.
In the throes of preparing for TMA02 now and loving it!

Just signed up for this course to start in October. How's it going LadyGlencoraPalliser?

Hi Evansmummy,
This week has been hell, I handed in my last 19th century novel TMA (4,000 words) on Tuesday and my ECA (5,000 words) for Creative Writing on Thursday.
Just the 19th Century novel exam next month to revise for now.
Working full time and doing 120pts of OU is crazy. My children barely know I exist.
But they are great courses, I have had a blast with both of them. Don't know which you are doing (19th C?) but I would thoroughly recommend either. Just not both at the same time if you value your sanity.
Fingers crossed for getting a PGCE place now.
(I am LGP, btw, changed my name a while back.)

Thanks TheFirstLady. Doing 19thC novel. I'm very much looking forward to it but a little nervous as it's been a long time since I studied any literature. Completed a Level 3 French course last Oct, but this is very different. Have made a good crack on the reading list and am really enjoying it. Can't wait to get started really!

Btw, I'm not working, and only doing one course. I do value my sanity! But I admire you for doing it, I am in awe that you can manage. When do you study?

Are there tutorials for this course?

Shoequeen1958 · 06/06/2011 12:08

I would seriously advise you NOT to do AA316 with anything else! I am within a week of finishing the course and have spent the last two years doing nothing else. I have a full time job and have barely managed to fit in the vast amount of reading and have put on a stone in weight with all the sitting reading and writing. Every single week has been a struggle - I cannot emphasise too much the considerable amount of work required if you have any aspirations to do well on this course. Expect not to have a social life or do anything else for at least nine months and very much advise you to read all of the books in advance of the course beginning. Good luck!

Funnily enough I am considering doing these two courses together from October.

DC will all be at school from September and I am not going to be working so I will have term times for study and TMAs and I've already read most of the books (although would reread obviously) - I thought it would be doable since both courses are equivalent to the last year of a full time degree, no?

I haven't done the first creative writing course, but since I used to write professionally I don't think it's such a big deal - hope I'm not wrong! I intended to write this year in any case but I feel the external deadlines will be useful for my chronic procrastination me.

wildstrawberryplace · 11/06/2011 13:16

Blimey, just realised that you did these at the same time as working time, TFL. Hats off to you indeed!

Also that this is old thread Blush. Still it makes me more confident that it is at least possible!

as1978 · 10/05/2014 09:58

I've signed up to do the same two courses in September, and also work full time. I've done 120 credits at level 2 this year but know the workload will be more for 19th century novel and advanced creative writing. Any tips on managing your time?
