Check with your local council as ours (Leeds) offers a free trial pack worth £30.

nigglewiggle · 29/09/2009 18:16

Also, if you want to choose your own you can get £30 cash back.

I would recommend trying a pocket nappy(where the absorbent bit stuffs in)like Bumgenius, an All-in-2 (the absorbent bit snaps inside a shell) like Itti Bitti and a two parter (a shaped nappy & separate wrap) like Tots bots. You can also get All in ones like Tots Bots Easyfit which go on in one piece.
You need to consider whether you want different sizes as you go along, or a one size nappy you can adjust. Also your drying facilities as Bamboo & hemp nappies take longer to dry than cotton for example. Microfibre dry the quickest.
You will also need a bucket/large waterproof bag and possibly some fleece or disposible liners.

what mumface said

bright colours; fuzzibunz are a pocket nappy that come in lots of bright colours, they also do some lovely daisy print ones that are gorgeous; check out nappyzone's website. Itti bitti nappies are snap all in ones, are fluffy and gorgeous and again come in lots of colours as well as some limited edition prints.

bumgenius are really good and do a range of lights and brights in colours. Not everyone gets on with pocket nappies though as it very much depends on the shape of the baby and the fit of the pocket.

As a novice I think a shaped terry nappy would be a good place to start, they are more reliable than a pocket or all in one so less likely to put you off if , and there are some lovely wraps that you can get to go over the top; tots rainbow wraps are funky and bright or wee notions also do some lovely wraps.

At 12lbs you can either buy a sized system (size 1s usually go up to about 20lbs so follow her line on the charts to see how much wear you will get out of a sized nappy) or else go for a birth to potty option, which can swamp a newborn but should be OK on a 12lb baby. Bambinex, lollipop, motherease all do a shaped terry birth to potty nappy which either fasten with velcro or poppers or you can use a size 2 nippa nappy and just fold down the front.

any clearer?

you could always contact a local nappy advisor to arrange a demo where they will come and show you the various options and some may even have trial kits that they will lend or hire out. If they hire them you will usually be refunded the hire cost if you then buy nappies from or through them.

Lollipop, babykind and others have advisors up and down the country or else local sellers will be happy to advise as well.

I have a very wriggly baby, and after fighting with him and 2-piece nappies (wrap and nappy seperate) I got some All-in-Ones (Kushies Ultra). They go on just like disposables, so they are good for nursery.

Bear in mind that real nappies are bulky, and soem of your DD's clothes may suddenly not fit! My DS has a very long body. This coupled with a cloth nappy mean that I have given up on trying to squeeze him into bodysuit-vests!

Octothechildherder · 29/09/2009 20:11

I would buy a few different ones second hand and try them out or borrow a trial kit from your council or an advisor. If you onto the Go Real site you can find what is going on local to you and get to try them on, test them etc before you choose.

comewhinewithme · 29/09/2009 20:39

Thankyou everyone I have just bought a Babyland reusable cloth pocket nappy and 1 insert just to try it out fingers crossed .

I love BTP - birth to potty pocket nappies. I find them good value for money as you don't have to buy a range of sizes and they are quite slim fitting IMO.
I use bumgenius and wonderoos mostly but have one close parent pop in and one blueberry minki.
I would definitely recommend contacting a local nappy advisor or go to a nappacino where you can touch, feel, see a range of products. It's a minefield when you start off!! GL

BikeRunSki · 29/09/2009 20:50

Have a look at the Nappy Lady website too. There's a detailed questionnaire, about your lifestyle, DC's build and er... habits and they work out which brand of napppy woudl be best for you. And i think they have local advisors.

ooh comewhinewithme - haven't tried one of those - look similar to coolababy - wouldn't like to say how it would perform but would be interested to know

comewhinewithme · 29/09/2009 22:29

Will let you know how I get on Octo.

i would also try different ones- 2 part systems are the most reliable- i LOVED my small sandys and airflow wraps.

LittlePants · 02/10/2009 08:00

Some places offer trials of any nappies they stock. I do anyway. It's really important to get the right nappies, so certainly well worth doing a "Try before you Buy"

littler1 · 11/11/2009 13:02

Hi, i was curious about pocket nappies too, but i'm on a tight budget. i've just seen a starter pack on ebay of 4 different nappies from china - coolababy pocket, coolababy aio, one velcro and one cheaper pocket. i think i will try these first as dont want to order 8 or more or wait for postage.

ellielou02 · 11/11/2009 13:09

Hi Litter
The coolababy nappies seem to be popular (I have not tried them...YET lol), if you read daisy's post she goes into more detail about the pros and cons of different nappy systems

NappyShedSal · 11/11/2009 13:12

Be wary of the cheaper nappies from China as the laminate comes away from the PUL very easily apparently - so may not be the bargain that it first seems.

Babybots · 11/11/2009 15:25

They will probably be fine, its a common misconception that nappies from China are cheap, nasty and no good when in actual fact most of the big brands are also made in china.! Coolababy pockets work really well, I've had nothing but good feedback on them.

Just make sure you follow the washing instructions and wash at 40 degrees (mainly the fleece one)

Enjoy and i hope they work for you.

littler1 · 17/11/2009 23:20

My 4pk of nappies from ebay arrived on saturday (v quick postage). Lovely colours and came with washing tips and details of where to buy more. I decided to give them a proper trial and have washed them each 4 times on 60C and dried in tumble drier, no problems yet. My favourite is the coolababy as the inner is so soft, but have found that the OMB nappy with velcro is the best at night as better fit on waist, have been using the insert provided with bamboo booster and have so far had no leaks. Only problem now is i still can't decide which one to buy more of!

Octothebaglady · 18/11/2009 10:10

Babybots does coolababy if you need more of them - I have one and quite like it.
