Help! What should I do with our just under 6m old?

I mean actually, physically. Where do you put them? At 25lbs she's too big now for chairs, walkers, swings, and door bouncers...
I cannot get anything done because there's nowhere that I can put her where she's safe for very long.
She gets bored just laying on the floor even if I leave toys out for her, because she cannot actually get to them yet (not crawling). So at most I get 5 min before screaming ensues. (fine for going to the toilet...not so great for washing dishes, making supper etc.)
If I sit her up she cannot stay sitting for long (6-8min at most) and I'm a bit afraid she's going to knock herself out when she finally falls back onto the (hardwood) floor.
I've also tried the highchair in the kitchen,(cannot use it anywhere else easily as the kitchen on ground floor while all other rooms on 2nd and 3rd floor); once the toys drop she also starts crying...so I spend my time picking up toys...
So what would you do? How do I get anything done?

Bebe if you are in N. BUcks I can lend you my jumperoo, it's the only thing I could leave DD in at that age (although she seriosuly was bored after 5 mins)

SummerLightning · 19/09/2009 22:24

mmmm...I would be tempted to keep using the door bouncer thingys myself, I hadn't even thought of checking weight limit on them . At 25lbs, she's around 11kg anyway right? It's not like you're putting a 20kg baby in one.
Also could you prop her up sitting with cushions on the floor?

SummerLightning · 19/09/2009 22:25

x-posts on the cushion suggestion there!

We had one of these for DD and it was a life saver.

We moved house and DD happily played in whilst we lugged boxes about was fab as she was conatained and not under the removal mens feet!

Just read its from when Baby can sit unaided so maybe not for you just yet. DD was amazingly sitting unaided at 4mths so was easier to entertain.

bebemoo · 19/09/2009 22:33

I am tempted to keep using the door bouncer like you said... Its not likely to snap (I don't think) at least for the moment...though perhaps I ought to move it to the door farthest from the stairwell just in case

Just how big is she?

I mean I've had big babies. Ds was a ten ponder and carried on on that centile but still fitted in swings etc when he was still in need of them

bronzebeard · 19/09/2009 23:32

Sorry I know 25lbs but thats not huge huge

bronzebeard · 19/09/2009 23:36

Just rememebered we used to sit him up strapped into his pushchair with toys across in front of him

bronzebeard · 19/09/2009 23:42

Not all the time I might add. I'm not the parent who keeps their child strapped to the chair all the time

bebemoo · 20/09/2009 10:03

Well she's off the graphs, but honestly I don't think that's saying much as so many babies seem to be these days. We've got her in 12m clothes which says a little more. She technically fits in the door bouncer no prob; her swing is too small really because of the weight more than anything.
I've not actually had her in a walker or jumperoo type thingy because as I was looking for them found that they all said weight limit 25lbs I think she'd fit in them though. She not a fat buddah baby, just a very strong, active, chubbyish, broad baby of a larger stature... kinda like Arny next to a normal man... may she never read that I compared her to the Terminator!

Maybe ds1 was too heavy for things then. I never thought to look I think I should shut up about my parenting before someone report me for endangering their lives and tying them to chairs

I would honestly just lie her down surrounded by toys. Its the frustation that gets them moving

bebemoo · 20/09/2009 14:25

Bronzebeard... I really wouldn't have thought to look specifically, I would have just assumed that she'd be fine given she's only 6 months...it was only because I happened to see it. I am a little surprised because 25lbs doesn't seem like all that much to me especially as I know other moms with babies the same size.
We're trying the floor with cushions and toys with varying degrees of joy (literally). I've also put in a bid for a playpen on ebay...

My 25lb dd is currently in her door bouncer, it doesn't look like its about to break but I haven't read the instructions to see if she's too big. Maybe I should go and look. Don't think we have instructions for her walker though, so I can leave her in that in blissful ignorance of the weight limit

greensnail · 20/09/2009 14:48

Just checked my instructions, and it will take up to 13kg - its a mothercare one if that's any help.

suiledonn · 20/09/2009 14:59

I love the Graco entertainer too. They can rotate around in it but not go anywhere and you can put loads of toys on the tray so there is a selection for you to pick up them to play with.

My friend had a sort of nest with 4 inflatable cushions around it - good for the sitting but still falling back stage.

Rosa · 20/09/2009 15:12

I found that the tears were more of frustration at that age drove me mad felt like I had a child velcroed to my hip ! Things got better when they could sit . I tied different toys to a gym and put over her chair ..then moved so she could bash with feet and then hands....Good look ..It will get better

I have a Fisher price hop and pop that has been hopped and popped and bashed if you are interested ..... Was going to post on the for sale when I got round to it ....It says max weight 25 lbs but my 3 yr old had a go last summer !

Horton · 20/09/2009 15:18

These are great for a child who is nearly sitting up or sitting alone but still immobile. Not too expensive, either.

nappyaddict · 20/09/2009 16:03

V cushion or play nest to stop her falling over when sitting up.

bebemoo · 20/09/2009 16:21

I've put a bid in on one of those playnests so we'll see if I can get one cheap

OP posts:
MrsBadger · 20/09/2009 16:29

yy playnest

I got mine secondhand for about a fiver(MN? ebay? NCT sale? can't remember) - the cover goes in the machine so no worries re it not being new

wingandprayer · 20/09/2009 16:33

I found playnest was ideal at that age and got a cheap one off eBay. Very handy that they can be deflated and taken round relatives or whatever too.

IsItMeOr · 20/09/2009 16:39

Widgey cushion was good for my 6mo ds until he was able to sit up by himself. He looked so chilled slumping on it and no weight limits .

If you've got hard floors, might be worth putting her on a padded playmat/rug to avoid too many hard bangs when she falls, but I found ds learnt after he did it once or twice.

Danthe4th · 20/09/2009 16:39

What about one of those play station things that they sit in they look like walkers but without the wheels, or one of those fisher price jumper things, mine all had one of those that you attach to the doors and they bounce in, they were great.

Danthe4th · 20/09/2009 16:42

Make her a treasure basket of loads of bits of sensory items, and have you got a mirror she can look in, thats always amusing because they think its someone else.

bebemoo · 20/09/2009 16:59

I also just got one of those foam playmats off ebay going ebay crazy looking for things
