How do you find out what your child has done at school today? 3 days in to primary school and I know nothing!

Ok so I know more than nothing.

We've had the letters S and A and actions to go with them.
We know that he has to put his hand up to ask a question which was enthusiastically demonstrated.
And we know the name of the boy he sits next to and that he got told off for shouting.
And that he keeps his gym kit under his desk.

But really, what about all the other bits in between.

I demand a video recording of his every moment.

IABU I know.

Help!

That's what primary life is like I am afraid and when they get to secondary school.... dear god, you know even less

colditz · 26/08/2009 23:21

he probably does a fair bit of running around.

Ds1 had a cake every day for his first term. And sat on the carpet and did nothing. And played with nobody. And sat on his own.

He played me like a fool, worked me into a tizzy, and at parents evening I found OUt it was all fibs

Platesmasher · 26/08/2009 23:21

Gah! How the hell am I going to cope?

Make friends with the mother of the loudest girl in the class. Then quiz her child.

Platesmasher · 26/08/2009 23:23

Good tip. Unfortunately I don't know any of the parents yet as we just moved here this summer. DH does the school run.

Yes, that's true. Someone else's child will be very keen to tell you what yours has done - "Mrs Platesmasher, DS had to sit on the Naughty Mat today." "Mrs Platesmasher, DS got six out of ten for his spellings, I got 10!"

piprabbit · 26/08/2009 23:28

I think there's a poem or quotation about only needing to give our children two gifts, roots and wings.

What you are hearing is the sound of fledgling wings flapping. Try to keep a lid on your worries, and pat yourself on the back for managing to bring up a child who has the confidence to make their own decisions about what they want/need to share with DM.

I know, I know, easier said than done.

Platesmasher · 26/08/2009 23:28

True, he's very keen to tell me what the naughty boys at his table have been up to?
Just hope he's not projecting?

Apples - I remember that well!

Platesmasher · 26/08/2009 23:29

fucksake piprabbit, you'll have me in tears!

Can't they install those one way windows and have a little observation deck for mentalist mothers?

OP posts:
bellavita · 26/08/2009 23:32

Nooooo - you drop them off and walk away and breathe a sigh of relief....

piprabbit · 26/08/2009 23:34

If you are a very very good mummy, you will be allowed to attend some sort of assembly or performance (possibly a nativity). At this point you will be so overwhelmed with pride and amazement at DS maturity and ability that you will definitely be in tears. Remember to take large dark glasses to all school events, even in mid-winter.

weegiemum · 26/08/2009 23:34

In primary one (all three dc) I was an immediate expert in what they hadn't done all day.

Typical convo with ds, especially would go like this:

Me: What did you do today, ds?
Ds: No painting!
Me: So what did you do then?
Ds: No reading!
Me:Did you do anything?
Ds: No playdough today!
Me (getting frustrated): SO what did you do before playtime?
Ds: No counting!

ad nauseum!

Platesmasher · 26/08/2009 23:34

Could I install a secret camera in his pencil case?
I could have him bugged.

ds P1 (5) does "anything", sometimes changes this to "everything"

dd, P4 (8) - didn't get a row -so far.

started school last Tuesday? Feels like a month ago.

bellavita · 26/08/2009 23:38

Platesmasher - it is when you go to pick them up and the door opens and you get summoned across the playground - you won't be wanting to know what he gets up to then so quickly, believe me . That door has been opened to me soooo many times before...

Platesmasher · 26/08/2009 23:40

oh please not 'nativity'. i'm going to have to get all humanist on him in december. how dreadful for him.

OP posts:
bellavita · 26/08/2009 23:41

Wait till you get a letter two days before requesting you make an outfit for the nativity!

Platesmasher · 26/08/2009 23:42

he can be a cow or a monkey.
we already have those costumes.

OP posts:
bellavita · 26/08/2009 23:44

Nah, that never happens!

With DS1 I kept all the costumes thinking they would come in handy for DS2 - not a hope in hell

Platesmasher · 26/08/2009 23:48

I am getting sewing machine lessons next month.

Bring it on!

Mine are now 15 and 12 and the standard answers to "what have you done today then?" are:

Infants = don't know/can't remember
Juniors = nothing
Seniors= stuff

that's about it really

MrsMerryHenry · 26/08/2009 23:54

God, Smasher, you're such a frigging control freak. He has his own life now. He doesn't need you anymore, except for food and the occasional cuddle. Give it a rest and leave him be, okay??

Actually I'm off to bed (before midnight!!!) so you can hurl as much abuse as you like and I'll be blissfully unaware until tomorrow night.

Sweet dreams one and all.
