Quick question re toddlers and dinner

I have given ds1 (2yo) something new fr dinner. He won't touch it, should I now cook something I know he will eat or leave it as he hasn't even tried food?

I know he's only 2, and I don't want to be mean and starve him, but at the same time, I don't want him to think that I will spend forever cooking him his own dinner if he doesn't want what the rest of us are eating.........

I just have no patience at the thought of pandering to small children's irrational food foibles.

juuule · 19/08/2009 18:28

That's one of your foibles, then, MD. It doesn't bother me and it doesn't seem to have done the children any harm.

littleboyblue · 19/08/2009 18:29

spoo I hadn't even though about giving potato waffles with roast chicken or something
I will def try just ignoring it.

juule Thank you. 9 children! wow
I do want to relax about it. The sensible part of my brain knows that he is not going to die if he misses the odd dinner, but just needed to get some input from others.
You've all been a massive help. Thank you.

I have to now get the screaming rat bags angels in the bath now and to bed.

Will pop back later
Thanks again

Don't worry, most kids try to do this - I've had it with all 3 of my kids - I agree with juule they all come out the other side and start trying new foods again. In fact dd2 was a fantastic eater and was weaned on homemade food no jars. And yet at 18 months she started refusing food. I've ignored it, given her small portions and just said you're not hungry so no pudding. Now she's 2.3 she starting to eat more foods again.

That's reassuring jay Thankyou.

OMG! Tonight I did Lemon Chicken stir-fry, and although ds1 didn't eat much, he tried it! Yay!!!!!!!!!!
He then tried a bit from dp's plate and ds2's. (there must be something wrong with my plate )

It made me so happy to see him just try it. He got down from the table and started playing so I just told him to come back and eat his dinner or there'd be nothing else, and then started convo with dp.
Ds1 came back, had another noodle then went off again, but that's ok. Just pleased he tried it.

Thanks again for all your help and advice yesterday

Great to hear this news. You sound so much more relaxed about it all. Lemon chicken stir fry sounds delish btw.
