Scepticism...

I'm pg with my first and have always intended to use reusables. I have a couple of friends who use them too without any major problems.

However, everyone I've told about this plan has reacted with utter scepticism and have said that I will pack it in after a couple of weeks. I think they think I'm going to use terry squares and a safety pin.

My intention is to use disposables for a short while until (if...) I get bf established and then move on to either washables or a nappy service (DH has been nominated as nappy tsar, so he's in charge of all that).

My question is, are reusables really that much harder to use and get along with than disposables? The thought of having a bin full of little plastic bags of poo turns my stomach.

Any advice/tips/motivation would be much appreciated.

I do think there is slightly more work involved as you do have to wash and dry reusables. BUT I don't think it's much more and not really worth getting worked up over.
Put the nappy into a bucket instead of the bin and then wash as you would your normal washing. As the volume of nappies reduces with the age of the child you can put the nappy in with the main wash.

I didn't find much difference in containment between disposables and reusables. And I never thought that disposables smelled bad unless they had been wet or soiled.

However, the savings with reusables can be huge, there are the environmental benefits and I feel more comfortable with the idea of no gels etc which come with disposables.

Many councils run trial kits now as do many Lollipop advisors - visit the Go Real website as see if there is anyone local to you who will lend you some for free

And if you feel your cloth nappy mojo deserting you at any time, just post a note on here and you'll get lots of support!

Ta all. You have thoroughly motivated me to ignore the naysayers.

My DH has decreed that the gadgety qualities of the Bumgenius v3 (pocket) have won him over after watching a considerable number of videos on Youtube.

I appreciate the efforts of the terry brigade, but we're going for modernity over Real Ale traditionalism...plus I remember changing my youngest brother's nappy and although I never skewered him with the pin (despite considerable provocation), it did seem too much like manual labour.

I will however try and get some samples of different sorts and build up a stash.
