sleeping in basinet part of buggy

My 4 week old is going to stay with my parents for a night, are they able to sleep in the basinet (not sure how to spell that!) part of the buggy over night, bearing in mind he wakes every 3 hours, is it safe for them? Or is this a big no no?!
Thanks

Yes, I know lots of people who've done this. It's just like a moses basket really. And in days gone by, babies slept in drawers lined with blankets.

MrsBadger · 06/08/2009 22:54

the word you're lookign for is 'carrycot'

which pushchair is it?

some have a mattress and ventilation system specifically designed for overnight sleeping and are fine, indeed ideal

otehrs, particularly those with squashy unstructured carrycots, aren't safe as the baby could overheat or get stuck

The only carrycot recommended for overnight sleeping is the Windoo, for the Loola pushchair.

MrsBadger · 06/08/2009 22:58

NB you do mean the carrycot, not the carseat, don;t you?

tbh a laundry basket or a drawer is safer as it's not squishy.

MrsBadger · 06/08/2009 23:02

and the Silver Cross Sleepover

And the M&P Ultima

and the Maclaren MX3 carrycot

and lots of the Emmaljunga ones

and the Bugaboo

and the Quinny Dreami (I think)

and the classic Bebecar ones

thisisyesterday · 06/08/2009 23:02

carrycot./basinette all the same thing surely? let's not get nitpicky eh

IneedacleanerIamalazyslattern · 06/08/2009 23:04

Most structured carrycots are suitable for overnight sleeping but some you do need an extra matress for.

differentID · 06/08/2009 23:06

Dreami is not and neither is the bugaboo

trixymalixy · 06/08/2009 23:08

It should be fine if the carrycot has a proper vented mattress.

TROLLYDOLLY77 · 06/08/2009 23:12

Its the Quinny Buzz. Thanks x

I was trying to help the OP - 'carrycot' is much easier to spell!

can't find anything saying Dreami is unsuitable for overnighting, have read manual carefully

am just checking bugaboo

differentID · 06/08/2009 23:14

I had a training session recently with both manufacturers.

MrsBadger · 06/08/2009 23:17

[holds up hands and backs away]
ok, Trollydolly, DifferentID says Quinny say NO

but personally for one night I would do it

AlderTree · 06/08/2009 23:20

My youngest loved sleeping in her carrycot in fact we ditched the moses basket because she wouldn't sleep in there at all. We had a britax pram and the carry cot bit was a structured one with ventilation holes you could open and shut. When we made that decision we bought a proper mattress for the carrycot and carried on from there. I'm sure for one night it won't matter.

I remember a time when my eldest was under one he had to sleep in the three wheeled buggy laid virtually flat because we visited my father didn't realise quite how ill he was and ended up staying over night unexpectedly. He was probably a lot less comfortable than in his cot given i put the straps on but sometimes needs must.

oneopinionatedmother · 06/08/2009 23:21

if its flat, firm mattress, not bent/toowarm why not?

my littlies sleep in something like that until too big anyway.

differentID · 06/08/2009 23:22

lol MrsBadger. It was a question I asked specifically

GetOrfMoiLand · 06/08/2009 23:22

tbh DD slept in her carrycot for about a month when she was a baby - she couldn't settle in her moses basket (what a waste of money that was), and the same with her cot. So I think it will be fine for one night.

IneedacleanerIamalazyslattern · 06/08/2009 23:31

The thing is there is so much different advice out there, I have been told in JL that the ONLY one suitable for overnight was bugaboo. I had a bebecar before and could use it overnight with a proper ventilated matress added.

trixymalixy · 06/08/2009 23:32

I'm fairly certain that the bugaboo can be used for occasional overnight sleeping with their aerosleep mattress.

differentID · 06/08/2009 23:40

maybe occasional, but the carrycot itself isn't vented and as such will not pass safety standards for overnight sleeping.

juicy12 · 07/08/2009 14:58

My DS (now 5) slept in the carrycot part of his M&P MPX travel system for about a month. He slept so well in it that we then transferred the Carrycot into his bedroom cot before he moved into the bedroom cot. DD slept in same carrycot for about 2 months and again slept really well in it (when she wasn't sleeping in bed with me . The Carrycot's ventilated on that particular version.
