my 4 year old eats too much - she eats adult sized portions and still wants more

she eats and then stops and then wants more.

Just eaten a bowl of pasta (adult portion) then seconds (3/4 adult portion) and wants pudding but is refusing a piece of fruit

she's not fat, she is tall (probably size of average 6 year old) and she is "solid"

what do I do?

Food standards agency says:
"Don?t give your baby high-fibre versions of foods, especially those with added bran. It stops babies from absorbing important minerals such as calcium and iron. It?s better not to give your baby brown rice, wholemeal pasta or bran-enriched breakfast cereals until they are older, although you can give some brown bread."

Misdee's thread here

and also this recent thread...

I haven't imagined it, though wholemeal bread is okay.

i agree each peacj that they say not to give it

health visitors also advise feeding petit filou with refined sugars etc

i have to say i think it a bit odd

i give mine wholewheat etc against those guidelines

EachPeachPearMum · 05/08/2009 10:45

ah... well I think we have a different breed of HV here [smug] because ours recommend BLW, and plain yog only! (with fruit added if you want) They are also pretty keen on reinforcing the 'food is only fun until they are one' line...

what a cross thread. eachpeach is right, giving kids wholemeal stuff is something to be aware of.

as it happens, i wouldn't give a child light mayo or light anything, really because of the ingredients. the light stuff is filled with fillers and sugars like maltodextrin, that's precisely the sort of food that confuses young appetites. they're taking x amount of food in but getting a poorer amount of nutrition for it, so next time they might eat x plus amount to make up. we do it too, it's the big diet con.

lidl do a DELICIOUS greek yog , that i use for those kind of tuna-ish meals, it's really lovely, like cream really, and has 10% fat, which is what should be in greek yog and is a lot less than normal mayo.

as for your wee girl, if the food yo're giving her is healthy i'd trust her to eat. but i'd stop doing puddings in the house if you're still worried.

NotanOtter · 05/08/2009 11:05

ours do blw but then give out some pack with PF vouchers in!

Aitch - my dcs would not speak to me if i stopped pudding

so annoying the expectant faces on the teenagers

msled · 05/08/2009 11:07

It says don't give your BABY high fibre foods. This isn't a baby - she's FOUR! Wholemeal bread is the healthiest option for children.

AitchTwoOh · 05/08/2009 11:08

lol well you will go and have fifty five kids, notanotter.

yes, it will depend on the age of the others, but really, pudding's not necessary. it's just yog (from lidl, try it, you'll die and go to heaven) with fruit and a splash of maple syrup for a treat round here.

obviously i hit the ice cream the minute the little sods are in bed.

AitchTwoOh · 05/08/2009 11:09

jeez, who rattled your cage this morning, msled?

NotanOtter · 05/08/2009 11:15

Aitch ahhh so refreshing to have similar parenting styles

Plain greek with fresh pineapple for mine tonight

fruit and nut for mummy

QOD · 05/08/2009 11:23

phew, my dd is still 98th centile for height & 50 for weight - weird cos she has been pretty much since birth

I would be the reverse LOL

msled · 05/08/2009 11:41

God, why is it so controversial to point out that advice for undereweight babies is not applicable to robust four year olds and that wholemeal bread was better than processed? I -thought this was the spiritual home of knit-your-own-lentils!

AitchTwoOh · 05/08/2009 11:45

lol
