Washing Cloth nappies

Sorry I am sure this has been discussed many times but need some advice.
My 11 month old is in one life cloth nappies and they are great, but, I am having a nightmare getting them clean.
I have tried several options:

  1. taking wet/soiled nappy and putting it into pail with nappysan. Washing nappies in 60 degrees wash with 3 tabs of persil non-bio. Outcome-nappies still smell of wee, so have to go on for further wash.

  2. taking wet, soiled nappy and putting it in pail with non-bio tablet washing at 60degrees with 2 tabs persil non-bio. Outcome- nappies still smell of wee so have to be re washed.

  3. taking wet, soiled nappy and putting it in pail with 2 drops of lavender and tea tree oll and water, washing nappies again they smell of wee.

I love the fact that I am doing a little bit to help the environment by using these nappies but surely the double washing defeats the object.
My washing machine is 3 months old top of the range Hotpoint and washes all our other clothes really well. I always try to get my nappies on the line to dry if weather good.
What am i doing wrong, tips greatly appreciated.

Sun def the best thing for the way poo stains nappies for tinies. In the winter, you can put dry nappies on the windowsill to get the same effect.

If it worries you (they are clean btw, just marked), then use a fleece liner. Nothing stains fleece somehow

Hello!

I have a question too please. My washing machne is starting to smell. DS has been in cloth for 2 years, but the machine is only 6 months old.

I've tried a 90 degree wash; it gets rid of the smell for a little while, but returns after a couple of cloth washes. (I dry pail, rinse, then wash at 40 degrees. I strip the nappies too occasionally, but that hasn't helped the machine, although I didn't expect it to.)

TIA.

I used to soak and I found the nappy bucket smelt dire. Dry pailing is def less smelly and easier, especially with a mesh bag. I just dry pail, wash at 60 routinely and I use the minimum amount of fairly cheap non bio (formil from Lidl, blue pack non bio for sensitive skin). This powder is one of the few which suits the members of the clan who have eczema.

I dont often get stains, I have a nice new hotpoint ultima and the 60 wash takes care of most things but as pp said, sunshine is pretty good too.

Dry pail, cold rinse before wash, very tiny amount of powder, non bio, 60 degree wash with superrinse, line dry.

Some of the pads are stained, but the outers are fine (bumgenius).

Washing nappies in hot water - any temp 40 degree + 'sets' smells. A cold rinse prior to a normal wash cycle helps to remove wee and ammonia smells. I always do a cold rinse first then wash at 40 with about two thirds the recommended dose of non-bio and a desert spoon of Lollipop Clean & Fresh, then do an extra rinse at the end. My nappies never retain smells - even when they had a strong ammonia smell prior to washing.

I have been using BG for 18 months & love them but have really strong ammonia smells. I have done extra rinses and tried stripping the inserts with dish detergent and dishwasher tablets. I do think there is some build up - any ideas on howvto get them back on track??

I got some napisan to either soak or use in the machine for the inserts - which would be more effective??
