Should I say anything?

My friend's child is picked up from school by a childminder who they've used for quite some time. My friend also has a toddler who comes to school for pick up. Last week I saw the childminder in the playground changing the toddler's nappy on a bench (picnic table type thing) Apart from the hygiene aspect (ugh!) I thought it was a bit off privacy wise and rather undignified for the child. She does come by car and could have done it in there presumably.

Anyway apart from the rights & wrongs of it, should I tell my friend? Don't want to be accused of stirring -is it any of my business? But think I'd want to know....

Erm I personally wouldn't have a prob with that. Would rather she had changed the child soon than kept them in a dirty nappy.

So no i wouldn't tell her.

Second what nutcracker says. I have changed my kids in the most dreadful of places because I prefer they have a clean bum to any dignity they or I may or may not lose in the process!

I used to change my dd anywhere I could just so long as she wasnt uncomfortable!!

I wouldn't have a problem either - I'd rather someone (or me) change my Ds's nappy when and where it needed changing that leave him and risk nappy rash.

As for the hygeine aspect - who's hygeine are you worried about? If it's an outside bench it's probably been

Stood on (by shoes that have been stood in goodness knows what) by children
Poo-ed on by birds, cats, other wild creatures.
Have flies, carrying all their bacteria landing on it etc etc etc

I do 'al fresco' nappy changes quite a bit as the changing table in the toilets at our local park is disgusting! Big time gross. The changing mat on the grass is a much better option and I use an extra wipe or 2 to wipe my hands afterwards (there is only cold water in the toilets and never any soap).

I think I would just be pleased that the childminder was quick to change the nappy tbh.

can't see anything wrong with it myself. have changed nappies in all sorts of wierd places.

Agree with nutcracker and the others i I don't see anything wrong with this.

Now, if it was an indoor eating area, maybe so. But an outdoor picnic table isn't really clean in the first place.

You could always mention it as a good thing and let your friend decide if it's ok...so 'saw your childminder the other day carrying out a very efficient nappy change in the playground'... you're not sharing your views and if you feel she might not like it you've done your bit.

Also agree with Nutcracker. I'd rather change the nappy than risk child getting nappy rash. DD was VERY prone even if nappy was only on for 5 mins after she had pooed her bum would be scarlet and sore so got into the habit of changing whenever necessary.

Why is changing a nappy on a bench worse than in a car? Because you can see it? Get over yourself.

I agree with Nutty too!

Having done it several times I know it's quite tricky changing a toddler's nappy in a car: car seats in the back (I hope!) mean you have to use the front seat and then they have the gear stick stick poking them in the head. Plus you have to bend into the car which is hell on your back. I would choose a bench any time.
