Best reusable nappies for a very slim toddler

I'm thinking of giving reusables another spin with my 17 month-old DD. We gave up when she was around 5 months. She's tall and very slim (on the 2nd centile to give you an idea).

What would be best for us to try. I've got a couple of Imse Vimse from the first go round and I have her in one this evening. It doesn't seem to be bothering her yet!

I didn't particularly like all-in-ones, or totsbots or motherease the first time round. I got on better with Imse Vimse in a Motherease wrap or a terry towel in a wrap.

Suggestions please!

Ooh, soaking is so stinky! Definitely dry pail, I just scrape the poo off with loo roll and stick it down the loo (if bits don't land on the paper liner) then just stick them all in together in a dry bucket until it's full. Don't need to wash with whites!
DS2 was (still is in fact) very, very skinny, and pockets def worked best on him. I found fuzzi bunz leaked as his legs weren't chunky enough and they're not hugely elasticated round the legs. My faves were Minki (although they gave him an ENORMOUS bum), and itti bitti d'lish.
DS3 is the opposite - v chunky - and he suits 2-parters best. Horses for courses....

LaTrucha · 26/06/2009 19:39

Well I've managed to rustle up some white washing - which is not really the right thing to do, is it?

I tried the motherease today and it was a bit bulky. And I'd need to get bigger motherease wraps if they do them. These are pinching her legs.

what nappies have you got atm- motherease and imse? are the imse one towelling or flannel? With her being so tiny it'll be a case of trial and error- some prefolds might work as she's older- easy to wash and quick to dry then just need to get some cute wraps

Dd1 is tall and v skinny - we found the fuzzi bunz petite toddler size worked well for her, she didn't need the large even though she didn't potty train till just turned three.

Hth.

mumblecrumble · 27/06/2009 17:05

We love terries! They fit all shapes!

LaTrucha · 27/06/2009 18:52

Curlyredhead - I'm a curlyredhead too so liek the name! Thansk for tip on fuzzibuns.

mumblecrumble - we got on with terries too. Do you use a wrap?

Abermum - I've got flannel ImseVimse, motherease wraps, totsbots (although they look too small now and haven't used them), those coloured terry squares you had. What prefolds and wraps do you think? Still haven't looked to see if there's another size motherease wrap. The ones I've got are pinching.

stop and don't buy anything!

TBH- i'd recommend prefolds and nature babies wraps for daytime- you won't spend a fortune and they are reliable. Then overnight (you may as well go the whole hog ) use imse's and an airflow wrap. Meaning that really all you would need to do is get some cheapy junior joy/ bambino mio pre-folds, and a couple of wraps and a new airflow (wraps really only need a quick rinse and air, you won't need many!)

I have prefolds and wraps coming out of my ears- do you want to borrow some and see whether they suit you and s? I've just ordered some new pink bubbles nature babies wraps from flame- they were only 7.50!!!

LaTrucha · 27/06/2009 19:26

That would be great Abermum. I'm not sure I'm going to go the whole hog though as I seem to be spending money like water ATM and am trying to rein myself in. Also, we still need to get a tumble dryer sorted and I'm NOT doing them in winter without one.

Well, if they were ONLY £7.50!

this is where pre-folds will come in handy mine dry overnight in the kitchen or in about an hour on the line in the weather we are having today

I'll dig some out for you- have a look on flame's site at the nature babies wraps- we have the pink camo atm and will be getting the pink bubbles- they are just sooo cute! and they will fit over prefolds and imse's so for an outlay of about £25 (two new wraps and some used pre-folds you could have a good basic system!)

I do like the gingham!

I'm drawing the line at drying them in the ouse. My house already looks like a laundry all winter. It's awful.

OP posts:
abermum · 27/06/2009 20:54

I understand the feeling- my house looks like a chinese laundry half the time- it has improved with only one in cloth at one point for a few months we had four in cloth- washing everyday if not more and nappies constantly hanging around the place

I have just dug out a pile of pre-folds for you- what wraps do you have atm- are they the popper airflows or the velcro rikki? popper ones will be no good with pre-folds. I shall bung in the bag some of millies' outgrown pocket nappies- they may be too small even on s- BUT millie has a fat arse and somewhat chubby thighs so they may just about fit I'll drop them off at some point tomorrow if i am heading your way- they are all washed and ready to go- i can demonstrate them if need be let me know about wraps and i shall raid the drawer in the morning- also some fleece liners and washable wipes included (you'd be amazed at the savings by not buying baby wipes for use in the house!)!

just don't get sucked into buying LOADS of nappies and things- thats when it gets expensive ! I'll convert you to cloth- i worked my magic on Janet and the girls

abermum · 27/06/2009 20:57

ooh and think- over the summer you will save money by not buying sposies and will be able to dry outside- thus finding the money to buy the tumble drier for the winter we think that even with one in cloth- using washable liners, nappies and wipes, we must save at least a tenner a week compared to sposies! and then with the next one it basically free nappying as you have it all there waiting

LaTrucha · 27/06/2009 21:19

You're an evangelist!

We've got the ones with poppers. They're definitely too small round the thighs - even her wee ones.

Am looking for a bucket!

If you are coming my way tomorrow give me a ring first. I've got to go and buy paint at some point.

LaTrucha · 27/06/2009 21:50

Ok. Bought the pail.

OP posts:
abermum · 27/06/2009 22:31

i told you not to start spending money!! but i suppose the bucket is kind of useful!!

It all depends when the boys are playing footie- i shall be standing in sun watching the little sods darlings miss kick the ball around the vicarage fields- oh joy i'll give you a bell when i know what taxi service is needed the boys are doing

LaTrucha · 28/06/2009 12:55

paddling pool out round ours if Millie fancies it. Sabela asleep right no but she did actually agree to go in it this time.

Clwt Twt nappies are good for slim children, not sure why, but they were good on my skinny boy.
I love the idea of pockets, but in practice I found them less reliable than a nappy with a wrap over the top. The least leaky pockets we tried were fuzzi bunz.
Do you have a nappy network nearby, they often do trial kits so that you can 'have a go' with different types of nappy before spending a lot of money.
There is a nappy review site here where you can read a bit about different nappies.

LaTrucha · 28/06/2009 13:16

Thanks Rowingboat.
