Serious bedwetting in six year old, what to do?

Was coming on to post the same thing. My boy is six and a half and has never had a dry night. We've been reffered by our fabulous school nurse to the bed wetting clinic. She says they don't see them until at least seven usually but as his is an extreme case, she's pushing for an early referral. We've taken him out of night time pull ups for the last week as the nurse said the clinic would be insistent on this. He is soaked two or three times every night. He doesn't always wake up but when he is wet, it isn't just a bit its from his knees to his armpits. He potty trained early but has always been for a wee lots of times during the day, sometimes every half hour. His wee comes out really fast and he cannot hold it for long. Nurse has given him excercises to do to try to strngthen his bladder, drinks at certain times of day to ensure bladder is being stretched and excercised etc. She thinks he'll need some investigations. Does anyone have any experience of such prolific bedwetting? Did it sort itself out? Anyone know what the investigations will be? Any help would be gratefully received!

dd2 is my star pupil though - she was dry day and night at 2, despite having cerebral palsy she used to ask me whether she could have a pull up too, as her big sis and bro had them....

she'd been dry for two years before we cracked it with dd1, who's 4 years older

I had an alarm cos I was still wetting the bed till I was about 6. It used to go off all the time whether I was wet or not (well it was 1980!) I think I was cured within the week
I just remember there being a wire mesh sheet under my cotton sheet, attached to a big box. No different tones - just the one loud buzz!

Whilst I'm not saying trying the alarm will fix the problem (and I still have a weak bladder - if I need to go I need to go) its definately worth a shot.

Sorry to hijack the thread ! DD has been prescribed oxybutynin to help with bedwetting and daytime leaking. I haven't given it to her yet but after reading some of the side effects feel very reluctant too. Has anyone's child had this?

madwomanintheattic · 18/06/2009 14:45

oh yes, we have oxybutinin too

it's to stop the bladder going into spasm.

sort of works here, but for nights the desmo is more effective.

no side effects here.

we also use lactulose as and when required (might as well get that one in too lol) just in case compaction is causing difficulties generally with the system lol

only about once every couple of months do we bother tbh...

Thanks madwomanintheattic, how much does your dd take. DD has been told to take 5 mls three times a day and up it to 10 twice a day if needed.
Thankfully she seems to be much better overnight and it's more the daytime leaking that is an issue.

I know its not habit but couldn'tlie. i work in a Ctholic school, the guilt would kill me!!

littlebrownmouse she probably asked you to do that so they know your child is not just being lazy in the morning and using the nappy instead of getting out of bed!

madwomanintheattic · 18/06/2009 14:57

are you talking about oxy or lactulose lol?

tis ds, oxy - we have tabs version 2.5mgs twice daily (with same advice to double if not effective)

we doubled it once, then went back to single tabs.

then i stopped it as i thought it wasn't helping but started to leak, so went back on. better....

i'm toying with the idea of stopping again lol and just sticking with the desmo (last time we stopped he wasn't on desmo). this has been going on for about a year lol, and i do find it tricksy to work out exactly what is helping... i'm erring towards the fact that the oxy is the least effective tbh, but it is def worth a try.

lactulose we can use up to 2x10 mls a day as required - maintenance dose is supposed to be 5 mls if required, but doc said we could cut down gradually to stop (stopping dead from large dose can cause horrible problems with bowels lol)

lol mousie. you are more virtuous than i.
