What did you BUY for your second baby?

What do I need to buy for my second baby?

I've got loads of old stuff in the attic from the first.

So far I've thought of:

  • nappy changing mat
  • nappies

What else do I need?! I've forgotten everything.

I didn't buy anything much. I was given a cot and a steriliser and loads of clothes and that was it really. So all we bought was bottles and nappies. Oh, and a buggy. See, as I think about it I realise I did buy some stuff but not much.

dropinthe · 09/05/2005 20:02

As has a second boy really didnt have to buy much other than a tandem pushchair!

Magscat · 09/05/2005 20:10

Mattress - I reckon it depends on how much the first one got weed on & how it seems after storage. I didn't buy new this time.

Clothes - I went into 2nd pregnacy saying 'it'll wear all it's brother's old clothes even if it's a girl'. Wrong. It was a girl but she looks so much like her brother did that I kept calling her by his name when she was wearing his sleepsuits. Just had to go & buy her nice new girly clothes (but not pink cos I hate it & not too many cos all the rellies went & bought loads).

Also bought one special soft toy so that ds didn't ever feel that his were threatened. He knows he might have to share toys but never his favourite Squidgy bear as little sister has her own Floppy rabbit. (We got our lad a present from his new baby sister as well, just to help with the bonding!)

We got a new cot mattress because our old one was only foam and had got a slight dip in it. Apparently that is dangerous for a new baby because if they are sick it makes a pool and they can breathe it in.

I can't really remember having to buy anything else apart from breastpads/toiletries etc as we still had all dd's stuff. I did get the brakes fixed on the pram so it would last another 3 years!

Seabird · 11/05/2005 21:15

Replaced dd's bouncy chair with a sturdier Jane one - safer when dd decides to rock ds!

I got a bottle of infacol for emergencies (which got opened after a particularly fraught day when ds was 3 weeks old).

Newborn dummies if you're planning to use them.

Breastmilk freezer bags (ditto).

Swaddle sheet (great one called the miracle blanket from Mothercare - no fiddly velcro like some of the other ones - ds sleeps like an angel when he's wrapped in it).

Plastic bath chair for ds so I can bath him at same time as dd.

I had to give a lot of stuff back to my sister, as the selfish cow decided to have a second baby herself - pah, call that support? - but I think all I actually bought was some babygros and nappies. Friends from the first time round passed on chair, cot and carrycot. And a buggyboard, although in fact DD1 hated it and just trudged along (she was 2.5 when her sis arrived).

I did get a new cot mattress, I think...

Nah, Pruni, next time round get someone to pass you on one of those slings. By now, you'll know someone who's got one.

Nappies, wipes, cotton wool, maybe out of season clothes, ie if your first was born in July you wouldn't have a newborn snowsuit. I also got a new changing mat and a new bath mat pad thing because the one I had for DS went mouldy. I had one that was a bean bag. Present from baby to sibling.

pootlepod · 11/05/2005 22:11

Haven't had second baby yet but a lot of people swear by either one of those baby swings or vibrating bouncers as they keep baby happy when you are dealing with the older one. That is of course if they like them

Also, Twinkle sell some silicone reusuable breastpads, here which I'm considering for next time.

marz · 11/05/2005 22:21

I had to buy new vests, dd1's old ones were very old and worn out...her first set had stretched and lasted from 3-12 months!

ionesmum · 11/05/2005 22:22

Sorry, haven't had time to read everything, so apologies if repeating.

New cot matress ( recommended by FSIDS)

Sleep suits, bodysuits (you will be surprised how cruddy the old ones are on close inspection)

Couple of special outfits - I found seeing dd2 in clothes that were dd1's quite emotional, and I wanted something that was just 'hers', IKSWIM.

Rocking chair (boy do I wish I'd had one with dd1!)

Sling or carrier (not that dd2 liked either, but it would have been a lot easier for me if she had!)

ionesmum · 11/05/2005 22:23

Oh yes, for you - new nursing bras - you may well be a different size this time. And get some Lansinoh just in case.

Shazzler · 11/05/2005 22:31

Just the ususal nappies, wipes etc. Felt bad for quite a long time after for not buying dd very much. We were given a lot of girls clothes (have older ds) so I did not even need to buy clothes.

I did buy a cot mobile but did not use it for long.

KristinaM · 11/05/2005 22:36

Congrats MP - i'm having another baby too, due November. But Ds is only 12 months old so I'm only planning to buy a twin/tandem buggy, a new cot mattress and another car seat. I'm horrified at how expensive the buggies are !!

Will not be buying new bottles ( only new teats) -they have not had much use as Ds still BF.Dont use baby wipes on newborn, only water coz we have a family history of allergies. Changing mats still ok.

Am determined not to fall for any cute baby outfits as had so many clothes given to us last time, some were hardly worn. Felt consumed with guilt about this, as only a new mother can be........

swedishmum · 11/05/2005 22:46

My mum was shocked that I was taking used babygros in for dd2 - said I would be the talk of the hospital so bought new ones!!
Last time was baby 4, a surprise 7 years after the last - I did the pregnancy test a week after doing a car boot sale to clear the loft. Wondered why the smell of hot dogs made me sick...

natts · 15/05/2005 16:55

tons of vest and babygrows[youcan never have toomany]
muslin cloth or bibs[i got through tons both times]
scratch mits[never liked em myself]
sudocream[just in case]
wipes[as someone said you'll be using them the min you get home anyway, ]you can alway run them under a warm tap to take out any chemicals, to start with
carseat[can't leave the hosp with out one]
sanitary towels and disposable or dark knickers
something warm for baby to wear home[snowsuit or something.
hat
top and tail bowl[never bothered with baby bath second time round, used to hold baby in a luke warm bath with dd1]
baby towel[still used one for a short while though i'm not sure why!]
nappy bag[any excuse to by a new bag aye]
TBH you only need the bare basics. You'll decover the other things you need and get them as required.
I work in a maternity hospital and the one thing we notice [i was to blame for this too] is how many different bags/suitcases mothers bring in with them.we end up with piles of bags all around the bed, mum buzzes for help in the middle of the night and we go arse over tit on the bags.
good luck with the list I'm sure it'll grow they always do don't they. great fun though i loved it.

charleepeters · 15/05/2005 17:59
