Man, I'd make a crap teacher. I HATE doing reading and spellings with DD.

Kids still off school (we get two weeks in our area for this holiday).

Just tried to do some spellings with DD, aged 6, year 1.

I lost it. Honest, I was snarling at one point. How can you read, write, copy one word about 5 times and still not get it? How do teachers not lose the will to live?

The word, by the way, was 'came' - four letters. There were others as well but the word 'came' just made me snap.

How to put a child off learning in one swift session with mother.

I'm an arse.

I remember doing a whole weekend on the word 'THE' and on Monday morning, I showed her the word and she proudly shouted 'AND'! AAAAAAGGGGGGHHHHHHHH.

And breathe.

As a teacher

1. You automatically are nicer to other peoples kids
2. You get paid for it
3. You wave them off at the end of the year for the next class teacher to worry about

Our house was a literal warzone re: spellings.

I gave up for my own sanity, DP is much more patient than me.

There is something about this kind of homework that makes me lose any patience i have very very quickly, i feel awful getting so frustrated with them.

I AM a teacher and I hate doing those things with my dd too. I have NO patience with her at all (where I do with the children in my class!)You are not alone!

I was so excited when DS1 (in Reception) got his first reading book from school, pathetically so. Oh, how I learnt fast, now every night I have to wrestle him to the floor to get him to read to me and chant "peace and love" in my head to stop myself from shouting "READ the WHOLE word! "STOP GUESSING!!!"

I'm still tense now and we finshed this madness 30 odd minutes ago!

I want to be supportive. I believe in the home/school partnership thing. I'm just not the caring, patient, cashmere wearing mother I thought I was going to be.

Oddly, I'm better with other peoples children. Maybe i should just farm DD out to another mother for homwork - like an exchange scheme.

I like the idea of an exchange scheme, i seem to have endless patience when helping someone elses child.

Damn it Tam - you're in Scotland so no where near me - I was going to try Kids Exchange with you!

It's heartening to know that teachers themselves can get frustrated with their own children though!

I still could not imagine facing a class of 30 children and having to get information in to them. I think I'd be struck off within a matter of minutes!
