Leaky disposables - please help. At my wits end.

DD is 17 weeks old. We started out in pampers newborn but found they leaked poo a lot. Switched to Huggies Superdry and hey presto, no more leaks. Now all of a sudden they leak too - everynight this week shes leaked wee so I've had to change her clothes and bed.

These nappies (size 3) are supposed to go upto 20lb (DD is 15lb). I used a size 4 last night which helped a bit but didn't solve it.

Yesterday the poo leaked out of her nappy, downn her leg and into her sock!

Now, she is napping on my lap and has wee-ed which has leaked all over my stomach. So that's both of us getting changed now.

Can anyone offer any advice? I know there is an awful lot on her about reusables and Im not ruling anything out but I am totally clueless on those and have spent so much money on baby things which have turned out to be wrong/never used (slings, useless co-sleeper cot thing etc.) I daren't jump in and buy something I know nothing about.

Help!!

well i always found pampers to be better tbh.

i would defintiely use the size 4 too.
don't want to sound patronising but make sure you pull all the little frills out around the nappy if that makes sense.

a well fitting vest with buttons underneath might help the nappy to stay in place (but you probably already do that)

dont know what else to suggest really

sorry, me neither, trial and error. I've always preferred pampers too, but to be honest its the shape of their botties that seems to dictate what works. I'd give other brands a go and see what happens. Tescos get the thumbs up from a lot of folk

I've never found a disposable which was any good at containing poo explosions, and I only used disposables with my first baby.

I'm so glad to have found cloth nappies with the second. They are so much more reliable.

I know exactly what you mean about expensive and useless baby equipment but if you want to try cloth nappies they can be picked up secondhand and sold on if you find you don't like them.

Thanks everyone. We have Tesco ones but she hasn't worn them enough to know if they hold much in (haven't tried them at night but I suppose I could give them a go - she'll probably leak anyway).

I do make sure that they are untucked around the edge and I double checked the last one because of the recent leaking. I can't really see what else I can do wrt how these nappies are on.

Pampers seem to send poo up her back and Huggies seem to have escape routes through the leg.

I thought all nappies were the same tbh which is why DH and I stocked up on Pampers while I was pg. We have just donated 2 boxes of size 2s to my sister who is due in September. I hope they're better for her.

Where do I start with cloth nappies? Would I be spending my days washing them? I'm prepared to give them a whirl.

You certainly don't have to spend your days washing them, so don't worry!

I keep my used ones in a bucket with a lockable lid and bung them in the machine every third day.

They're all in a laundry mesh so I just grab the mesh bag and chuck them in.

If you look here there's lots of tips about nappies and the forum has an FSOT anything else section where nappies are frequently up for sale.

Popular makes include Motherease and TotsBots so you might like to look at those first.

I like two part systems so I have a cloth nappy covered by a waterproof wrap, and the very best wraps I've found are made by Motherease. Motherease Rikki fasten with velcro and Motherease Airflow with poppers. They are both great but older babies often like undoing velcro.

Fot the actual nappy part my favourites are TotsBots Bamboozles (made of bamboo) and Motherease One Size (mine are cotton, but they also come in bamboo).

Hope you get on with them.

Thanks so much, I will look at the link and perhaps buy a couple to try.

My local council run a scheme offering cashback on the purchase of real nappies or a trial pack for free so I might give those a try.

I found tescos own nappies to be the best.

EachPeachPearMum · 28/05/2009 17:30

nappy containment really depends on the shape of your child!
I moved ds (15weeks) into size 4s 4 weeks ago as he is an 'odd' shape
he doesn.t leak poo- we use nature nsppies and pampers baby dry at night.
dd was a different shape, we used nature nappies only- but she had huge poo explosions, and always leaked

HullabaLuLu · 28/05/2009 17:49

I'm going to buy a pack of Pampers baby dry and some Tescos ones (just checked - our others are Asda) and experiment. I think I'll also give the local council trial pack a go.

Just tested Huggies size 4s on a big poo ( dd only poos once a day now but there is loads of it). It went up her front but didn't leak. I'm not sure if that's much better. Is there a risk of cystitis in babies from something like this?

I never knew something like nappies could be so challenging.
