Is my DS ready to potty train, and if so, how do I do it??

Sorry, this has been asked a million times before, but I would really appreciate advice.
DS is 18.5months, in cloth nappies (if that makes a difference).

For a few months now he has been hiding away to poo, not every time, but mostly. Sometimes he will say 'poo, poo' as he is doing it (most recently on a plane, which was ).
Also, the other day he was running about with no nappy on when he went into the bathroom, stood right next to the loo, said 'wee' and proceeded to wee on the floor by the loo. Sadly I wasn't quick enough to lift him on to the loo!

I don't really want to go down the gradual potty training route- I'd rather he was in nappies or out of them IYSWIM. And I wasn't expecting to even think about this until next summer, when he will be 2.5.
So, is it possible to 'cold turkey' train a child of this age? And what do I do now?
Any thoughts appreciated, and well done if you've read all this!

What about having a potty around when you are at home and your DS can be nappy free and using nappies/pullups when you are outside the house ? That way he can use the potty when it is easy for you at home and if he has an accident (miss) outside the house the nappy backup will mean no mess.

I combined nappies/trainer pants and real pants for my DD as and when it suited me and it never caused any problems for us (but we do ECing rather than traditional toilet training)

Do what suits you and that means giving your son as much potty/toilet time that you can handle happily
