Loadsa questions- breastfeeding, slings and sweat

Ok Ihave quite a few minor questions so thought I would just bung them all in together

Breastfeeding makes me sweat. Is this normal? Does it ever ease off? Anything I can do about it? Its horrible I wake up at night and have to change my bra, between my breasts its always sweaty and I just feel ugh all the time. I'm going abroad ina few weeks where it'll be hotter and wondering how I'll cope.
Which leads me to slings. Ds doesnt like being put down so I've been carrying him around in a wrap sling. Great he loves it, its comfortable and frees up my hands but of course its hot and I had been originally planning on using it when I was away as I'm travelling on my own and didnt want to take a buggy as well. Are there any lighter slings that are just as good? Anyideas?

Is there ever a stage when the painful engorgement feeling goes away if they sleep for a bit longer than normal. Ds feeds regularly but has a longer sleep during the day and sleeps well at night. during these times I get really painful. Is there ever a time when this eases off or if not how do extended feeders cope with it fo so long.

I did have more but cotton wool for brains cant remember them so will add them as I do.

And if anyone else has minor questions, ones where you want to know but dont think its worth a whole thread feel free to add them. I probably want to know the answer too

Don't know anything about slings but yes I do sweat more when breastfeeding. Don't know why though.
You don't say how old you little one is but eventually they should settle so they are producing milk when you need it rather than all the time IYSWIM.

foxytocin · 24/05/2009 14:23

get a CalinBleu gauze wrap. if it is a stretchy you have, you can sell it on to a newbie mum so it won't be a loss.

yes you sweat more in the early weeks of feeding and some people have a more generous supply than others and are more likely to become engorged.

the sweating settles down as does the engorgement. as already asked, how old is your baby? you may want to search the MN archives with the key phrases 'oversupply' and 'block feeding' to see if these things could apply to you.

yes, it totally makes sense to travel with a tiny baby and a sling instead of a buggy. I was in the middle east for 3 months with a 3mo old and a 3yo and never missed the buggy.

about the breastfeeding and sweat thing, i think it is linked to the evolutionary fact that the milk glands are modified sweat glands. so the upping of production of one is still linked to the production of the other. don't quote me on that however. but both will settle down, honest.

hes nearly 6 weeks.
To be honest I dont remember it settling down with my others and I fed them til 6-9 mths so had to ask. Will look at block feeding
Glad the sweating settles down though. I remember it for the first fortnight or so with the others but it hasnt stopped this time and has been getting me down. Especially if its going to put a downer on my trip
Will look at a calin bleu too. I'm currently using a moby and its pretty thick and heavy. Will look for the other in a light colour. I can justify too as I use them so much. Will just sell them on when hes older

bronze

this is how i found mn( in 2003!) from terrible sweats.
i had to change sheets it was that bad. There is no answer seemingly.

realy sympathy for you. It does stop.

SpookyMadMummy · 24/05/2009 14:48

Re the sweating - I find nights are the worst like you. I go to bed in a feeding bra, and not much else on cotton sheets. I also have a cotton nightie that buttons through which I slip on for the night feed without doing up the buttons. It has settled down over the last few weeks and i am not as hot and sticky in a morning.
My Dd (7 weeks) goes for 6-7 hours at night and at first when she did that my breasts were horribly engorged, now they are comfy when Dd wakes to feed. It does get better.
No advice about the slings i'm afraid

Bronze my dd2 is 3months and I'm still sweating on a night though it has lessened and yes I think my sweat smells too. Dh reassures me it doesn't but I think so.
No idea what's going on.

Can tell you it's happened with all my kids (4) worsened with each one.
However, I think it might be why I lose all my baby weight fairly quickly, I sweat it all out!

mrsgboring · 24/05/2009 16:23

Hello Bronze

Yes, the sweating is normal - it's one of the ways your body gets rid of the extra blood from pregnancy - it sweats out the fluid basically.

I was going to suggest a GypsyMama / Wrapsody gauze wrap - similar to the Calin Bleu but a little softer and very pretty patterns. I have one and adore it. It also has a pocket in the tail which you can use to pack the wrap away into - v. handy and neat.

Alternatively, you could go for a mei tai, which is a different type of carrier with its own pluses and minuses, but less fabric so cooler overall.

foxytocin · 24/05/2009 18:25

i believe either of those are lovely and cool.

depending on your clothes size, the Baby Sling Simple size will be a bargain.

the site says if you are a 6/8. in my opinion, if you are a size 10/12 possibly even a size 14 if you are used to tying a wrap, the Simple size will be sufficient. I am using a 4.3m Storchenwiege with dd2 and have plenty of fabric to tie off.

sorry took so long to get back. i ad to go get dd2 checked over at the clinic as she seems to have a virus.

bronze · 24/05/2009 18:32

thanks I might go for the simple one then as about 10/12 top half and can tie a wrap pretty easily

hope your dds ok

decided to order the calin bleu normal size. Now just got to decide which colour, natural for lightness or a green/brown so doesn't show marks.
I'm the most indecisive person ever

i love the Amazing Amber and Teal Blue most. I like like that rich brown too but it depends on what you have to wear with it and for me what is already in my stash.

they wash and dry quickly when they need a wash.

Natural for me runs the risk of looking like surgical bandage or the mummy-effect. :/

I would have one in every colour if I could afford to but I cant afford a stash of them. My ring slings brown and my moby dark green so I'm tempted by the olive or the teal. Think I'll shut my eyes and point or do eeny meeny

OP posts:
foxytocin · 27/05/2009 11:59

i vote for teal then.
