I think boys with older brothers might stand up sooner. Potty to toilet - we got a training seat that ds could put on himself and started encouraging that - much nicer than having to deal with the potty! Probably had moved over to this by 3yo?

my ds started standing when he went to a preschool with "rhinos" and saw the other boys doing it. he never did the potty thing really but trained late so at 3.5 he went straight to the toilet

Boys copy other boys and their Dads.

DS1 at 2.5 and DS2 didn't really do the potty thing and went straight to the toilet standing up.
Boys copy other boys in DS2's case DS1 and DS1 wanted to be like daddy.

thanks for this - what about when out using toliets - if they want to stand do you have to hold them up? and what about doing poos out and about in public loos (try not to use them myself - am a bit phobic of them) - is it gross?!

nomorechoc - I take DS1 and DS2 in the WC cubicle in the male toilets. They want to use the urinals as they want to feel grown up but because they are not really tall enough for adult urinals it is safer to use the WC. Occassionally public loos have urinals that are lower down for children but rarely so.

I have never found holdig them up actually works very well. They just cannot go for some reason. They are often not clean either. I would be extremely relucant to let them go in on their own - except in a restaurant which I know well.

If you are a woman I would take them in with you until they are age 8. Otherwise, I would go in the disabled loo with them. As long as there is not a disabled person waiting - it does no harm and boys are usually fairly quick.

Poos out in public loos are no trouble but again I never let them go on their own.

I hold ds2 up as he is still too shot to pee even into a WC he seems not to mind. DS1 just stands and pees again in a WC as notmally goes into the ladies with me but they are both quite young so hve never had anyone object.
I am not keen on public loos but in poo emergencies I wipe the seat down with baby wipes before letting dc's sit on them.
