At what age did you begin to thicken your childs feeds?

Did you just thicken the milk or give solids at 5 months Frizbe?

if you are talking about formula you don't ever

at 26 weeks when weaning on to food, you can make up a little baby rice with formula and spoon feed it to baby or you can go straight on to purees

as in you don't ever put anything but milk in a bottle

used it as a first weaning food mixed with EBM (on a spoon) four days (I think) before dd2's 6th month birthday.

but you can give baby rice earlier

I never used it, went straight onto pureed carrot and fruit at 6 months

Its just a food so from 4-6 months as is goverment guidence - people do give it eariler, but not sure you are "meant" too!

babies don't need anything but milk until 6 months, but you can start giving solids from 4 months, definitely not before 4 months though.

Norash, is there a particular reason why you want to give it? I honestly think it's all such a faff, it really is, that leaving it as long as possible is the easiest option.

Some babies seem to sleep better after solids, but others don't - there's no telling. And doing it too early really isn't good for them, their system can't take it.

The idea of thickening feeds in bottles is not advocated in UK (choking hazard etc), although it is still common elsewhere in Europe (it is a mixture of cereals I think, not just rice, and very dilute). However, iirc, this is still not introduced before weaning age so 4 months old at the earliest although World Health Organisation research suggests no solids are necessary for under 6 month olds.

In UK baby rice mixed with milk in a bowl and offered from spoon is suggested as a first cereal for weaning a baby but if you can go straight on to pureed fruit and veg. For example, with my second I used baby rice as a thickener rather than a food in itself because I weaned her closer to 5 months.

my children are older and at the time it was advocated that weaning should be at about 4 months but I NEVER thickened bottled feeds - whats the point?

if you ensure you don't wean till 6 months the bowel is sufficiently mature to cope and research shows it can help avoid later onset of allergic reactions such as excema and asthma

the British government now advises that weaning should be done from 26 weeks on (not from 4 months)

personally I've weaned 2 kids at 4 months and 1 at 6 months

Mosschops - the guidance to delay solids till 6 months applies to formula fed infants too.
