Tell me about wool wraps please

I know nothing about them.
How do they not let wetness through?

I'm interested as I find with normal wraps to get them to the point where they dont have gaps around the legs I need to do them too tight for comfort. Wool wraps look a lot more comfortable and fitted.

Do they only work with certain nappies?

You lanolise the wool. This helps stop the moisture from going straight through the wool - it allows it to evaporate through the wool iyswim.

They work with all nappies but you might find:

  1. microfibre nappies are more prone to compression leaks - because the urine coats the fibres of these nappies
  2. aplix & nippas can catch the wool

So if I bought some would I need to do it myself?

Is there a best make?

I mostly have ME one size and a few sandies plus a couple of odd ones thrown in. Would they work ok?

Yep those nappies would work fine.

You do the lanolising yourself...you need to do it roughly every month. You can either buy solid lanolin - you add a teaspoon to a small amount of boiling water with a squirt of baby bath and mix...then add to a bucket of lukewarm water (so the end result isn't too hot for the wool iyswim) and soak overnight OR you can buy spray lanolin which you spray onto the wool, rub in and leave to dry.

Lanolin you can get from Bibs n Bots, Under the Gooseberry bush and a few other stores. I think Bibs n Bots do a spray lanolin too.

ok so I could find a pattern and get my mum to knit some... sounds good
I assume theyre the things called soakers?

DS has got a pair of soakers which are like little shorts (second-hand but originally from Natural Knits for Nippas) and they are just brilliant and quite possibly the cutest item of baby wear ever! He's also got a poppolini wool wrap which is fab. Never had any leaks from either although if he sleeps on his front all night then he gets a bit of compression leakage.

I find the solid lanolin works loads better than the ready mixed stuff you can buy. I got mine off ebay.

I've been trying to find a good pattern for my mum to knit but haven't had much luck. Can you post a link if you find one please Bronze or anyone else? Cheers.

Bumfluff has lanolin

craftynclothy · 10/05/2009 20:53

Didn't know that

Flamesparrow · 10/05/2009 20:56

Yup, got liquid, 2 different sizes of solid, can get the spray stuff but have never seen the point - doesn't do it well enough imo

I am selling some wool on Cloth Nappy Tree Forum atm - a cashmere wool wrap, it is so beautiful and some really pretty, reliable longies - have a look

lovely wrap...

cheesesarnie · 10/05/2009 21:15

we used disana on ds2.they were just simple, reliable, easy to use and cheap!

Flamesparrow · 10/05/2009 22:07

I have tried so many different type - disana were good, love hollow oak (got shorties and longies in them), seahorse slacks are lovely, woollywraps are very reliable.

I never had any issue with nippas catching the wool.
