How many dry night time nappies before you got rid of them?

Ds (4.2) somewhat unexpectedly woke up the other morning with a dry nappy. So we gave him a lot of praise and said if he had 5 consecutive dry nappies we would try without them etc. Day 4 and he had a wet nappy (albeit only slightly and not like the usual sopping wet ones!) although he was convinced when he got up that it would be dry. He was understandably a little upset as he thought he was doing well. Im not usually one for backing down on things but he was so disappointed to have to start again I don't want to discourage him. Would you start again to go for the 5 consecutive nights or let him try without? How long did you leave it before you got rid of yours? I don' lift him before I go to bed by the way!

It doesn't seem fair to punish him for something he did in his sleep. I would invest in a waterproof mattress protector and keep some old towels handy so that if he wets you can throw a towel over it rather than change sheets in the night.

With my dd (aged then 3.6) i was waiting ages for any dry nappies, she seemed to soak everyone so I just bit the bullet, stopped her nighttime drinks (no drinks after 5.30pm - well maybe a tiny sip), made her do a wee at bedtime then lifted her at 9.30. I put waterproof sheets on her bed and a towel. And do you know we have (so far) never had an accident. If she does need a wee she will wake up start yelling, but she can hold it in until morning.

So I would say don't stress too much about lots of dry nappies, I dunno if my dd is unusual (but I doubt it). I think there is something about just going for it and whipping that nappy off.

Go for it. Put towels and sheets on the bed and see how you go. He sounds keen - how bad can it be?

Yeah - go for it - stick two sheets on the bed with a waterproof between them. That way if he's wet in the night you only have to strip off the top sheet and waterproof before staggering back to bed. As you can tell I am all for an easy life.
I'd say he's almost there anyway if he's dry more nights than wet.

Stuff you are probably already doing but will help.

Only half a cup of fluid in the hours before bed.
Avoid irritants such as cocoa, orange juice etc as these will make him wee.
Get him to empty his bladder before bed.

Thanks all ... the problem is he comes home from nursery about 5/5.30 really thirsty and is in bed at 6/6.30pm so always has a drink. It is strange he has always been sopping wet every morning then Monday, Tues, Wed he was totally dry but Thurs and Fri mornings wet again ... but he has been convinced that he would be dry so he is obviously sleeping so heavily that he doesnt realise he is going in his sleep. Will sleep on it again tonight and see how he goes ... I am not totally convinced he is ready!

Would he be fooled by cloth/washable pull ups - he may think he just had big boy pants on and wouldn't get upset?

bodiddly · 08/05/2009 13:09

He wears disposable pull ups to bed and to be honest isnt hugely upset just a bit disappointed I think. Its always the way I guess when you praise them and encourage them and then they dont manage something - they are just a little sad they aren't getting the praise again ...!

Oh I see. I'm in no rush to get DS1 out of night nappies either to be honest. He is 30 months and has started to be dry for a full week at a time but then the odd wet nappy (and besides i've just bought him some new lovely nappies in XL!)

craftynclothy · 08/05/2009 13:19

Dd had 4 dry nights when we went nappy-less at night. Tbh we were more confident about going for it because 2 of the nights she was dry she had actually woken through night and asked to go to the toilet.

bodiddly · 08/05/2009 13:31

that's good craftyandclothy ... ds has never got out of bed at night so I am not convinced he would. I think I will see what tonight brings and then maybe bite the bullet over the weekend.
