Worried mum thinking about doing first aid course -any recommendations?

I have a 9 week old DD and am worried about what might happen if she started choking or anything like that. Thought a way of dealing with this fear might be to go on a course - DH is keen too. Does anyone have any recommendations of one to do? Are they really expensive?

The Red Cross runs courses but my local one didn't have a specific one aimed at parents just a general one. Maybe they only do general ones?

TBH my main problem isn't not knowing what to do in an emergency but trying not to pass out myself with the stress of it all... Recently had to rush DD1 to A+E in a taxi after a nasty fall in the park and I had to keep my head between my legs the whole way while she was crying next to me...bloody hopeless I am...

They cost about £30 and yes the Red Cross is a good place to start, or your health visitor should be able to give you a list of contacts. Neonatal first aid is a specific course, but normal first aid does cover child injuries/choking etc.

I think that's a really good idea - IMO all parents should do a basic first aid course as part of antenatal classes!

Ask your HV, and maybe try the maternity unit at your local hospital. Some run classes for parents of prem babies and may let you attend. Otherwise Red Cross, or St Johns do first aid classes.

thank you - my HVs are a bit over stretched and strssed the whole time so I might investigated Red Cross and St Johns myself.

Sidge - yes I wish that antenatal classes did that! Cd have done with that other than all the time spent telling us we wd have no time to sit around any more....

Have you tried your local Children's Centre? The Sure Start ones? I know the one near me did these courses for free now and then...
