Righty ho. I have a large 4 month old who's already getting interested in the velcro on his wraps. Fortunately all but two are smallish ancient old wraps passed on to us that I never expected to last too long anyway. Underneath he wears, atm, MEOS with the occasional folded terry square, and I have a large Sandys on the way for him.

The MEOS are incredibly bulky and I think won't last him round the legs beyond late summer/autumn. I'd like to replace them, slowly, with a good popper pocket nappy. I've had pretty ropey experiences with pockets so far, but I hear such good things about them and have read that they're generally slimmer fitting than a two part system. If I'm ever to get DS out of disps when he has to wear trousers, ie when we go out of the house, then I need a slimmer nap.

So, can anyone please recommend a slim fitting popper pocket nappy that has a good reputation? Thanks!

Upsy Daisy (15% off at the moment for Real Nappy Week but this ends really soon) have a good reputation for their pockets - they custom make them and you can choose either applix or side snap. My first one arrived this morning (it is pre-loved and looks stunning). I think the pockets start from about £6.50 each at the moment here and you get the inserts separately - I have ordered a french soy one as that is supposed to be very soft, absorbent and slim and it was only about £2.50.

Wee Notions also have a great reputation for their side snap pockets, but I haven't got one!

I have wonderoos and love them. Blake has never had a leak in them, I started to use them when he was about 7 months old. They don't have a great reputation on smaller babies, which is making them really cheap pre-loved. I have paid £4 posted without inserts (and will use easy peasy hemp inserts, which are reduced during real nappy week too) and £5 or £6 posted with both inserts. Hemp inserts are slimmer than the microfibre.

Has that been any help or just confusing?

That's been a great help, and explains why I was so disappointed with my two Wonderoos! Max is big, 20lbs, but still only 4 months old and the Wonderoos have been a disaster. I'll hold onto them for a bit, or even try them again as it's been a while.

Thanks!

Your MEOS are actually likely to last much longer than you think because babies slim down a lot once they're mobile.

I, too, had a chunky baby who was wearing large wraps at something like seven months. I sold the medium wraps and then had to buy new ones when Master Podge turned into Master Skinny.

At 18 months he has only just finished with the second batch of medium wraps.

I agree your MEOS will last longer than you think. My DD is still in them at 16 months but have heard lots of people use them sucessfully till potty training.

But yes, pockets are more slim fitting. I have lots of pockets (in fact, I have a lot of most types of nappies ). I like different ones for different reasons:

  • Bumgenious are fab because they are probably the most reliable pocket I have, and the most slim fitting. But they start to look tatty very very quickly. (But still do the job). They are also a bit plain
  • Blueberry onesize/BBOS are great because they come in funky patterns and are soft and fluffy. They are reliable enough but not quite as good as BG.
  • Mommys touch are great because you don't have to take the inserts out for washing which is nicer than having to touch the wet, soggy inserts when you have a very wet nappy. BUT they seem harder to get a good fit than the above. We go through phases of them fitting well and not fitting well iyswim. Not so great on tiny babies.
  • Wonderoos I never got on with. Always had leaks so sold them on.
  • BBOS delux are excellent but I only have one. They are very like the BG ones but don't seem to age as quickly. Don't see many of them around though.

I can get the bumgenious and BBOS delux to fit both my tiny 7lb newborn and my 16 month old and they are slim and reliable on both. Even on the newborn, with a good insert, you can't even tell she is in cloth once she has her clothes on.

If you do invest in pockets, it is worth bearing in mind that most come with microfibre inserts, which will be fine for now but if you end up with a fairly heavy wetter, you will most probably need something else either instead or as well as. This isn't a major cost though. Easy peasy hemp inserts are 5 for £10 (less when on offer) and are very good. You could put these under the normal inserts and you will hae enough for even a heavy wetter as hemp is very absorbant (but slow to absorb which is why it should be used under something else - microfibre, cotton or bamboo usually).

Sorry if I have comfused you even more! Feel free to ask me anything though if I have.

I use Bumgenius and they are absolutely fantabulous but they are of course velcro/aplix 5mth dd hasn't discovered them yet so we're fine but if that's a problem then maybe not?
Have you thought of Fuzzi Bunz? We've got a couple just cos I couldn't resist the Daisy one and they're very slim-fitting but do come in a couple of sizes so it's not btp. They are popper fastening and are very adjustable.

I think the p'tits Dessous mini-maxi is a far better option than Wondertoos. They expand much bigger, and are much longer in the rise than the Wonderoo, but also adjust much smaller at the other end. Additionally they don't have the frill of a Wonderoo, which often wicks.
