Please help, I am living in a world of poo.....

So DS1 (3yo) is having problems with poo. He started off being very constipated one day and eventually passing two really big poos which hurt a lot to get out, poor lamb. Lots of crying and straining.

I've been dosing him with lactulose ever since to stop it recurring until his bottom feels better, but now he is withholding and refusing to go. When he gets the urge to poo he sits down and looks like he's straining, but actually he's straining to keep it in.

This has been going on for over a week now - he does poo properly occasionally, mostly at nursery, and small bits escape every time he tries to hold it in, but I don't know whether to ignore, or talk to him, or what.

I've tried explaining about why poo needs to come out, I've tried showing him how we flush poo away (he isn't potty trained yet), I've tried bribery with chocolate, I've tried ignoring, but he's still doing it. He eats a good diet, lots of fruit and veg and water and we've increased the amount of water by reminding him to drink etc

We recently had another baby (4 weeks old) and I'm wondering if that's part of the problem? I also looked up chronic constipation and read the MN archives and it's possible he's still constipated and the bits that are passing are the soft stuff getting round the blockage, iyswim, but I'm not sure. He could just be trying to hold it in all the time without actually being constipated.

I don't know whether to take him to the doctor, or whether making it a big deal like that will make it worse.

DS2 (4 weeks) has a lot of problems with wind and poo as well, so I feel like my whole life is about poo right now!

Sorry WFH, no advice here. I'm still learning about korma poos! But will try to keep bumped for you. Could you get phone consultation with GP and maybe a script for Movicol?

do a poo chart and stick it in the bathroom.

your poo
dh's poo
his poo

everyone gets a shiny star or sticker everytime they poo

if you have a DP in your family, i think that boys tend to idolise them and therefore a race to the poo post prize between dad and son might just be what helps?

WhatFreshHellIsThis · 30/04/2009 13:39

wow, that's a fab idea! he is very competitive and daddy is god, so that might work!

the poolympics....i bet DP gets really competitive about it too...

How do you prevent cheating in the Poolympics? Would an independent judge have to observe each poo?

Acinonyx · 30/04/2009 15:43

Dd is on movicol because she holds onto her poo. If they hold on too long it gets very difficult to pass (with just little bist leaking out) - IIWY I would go back to your gp. Lactulose makes it soft, but doesn't actually push it out.

We are obsessed by poo in this house

Tortington · 30/04/2009 18:17

pmsl@pooolympics and rules.

BitOfFun · 30/04/2009 18:34

Dd is on movicol too. She has terrible problems just like you describe, so I do sympathize...good luck with the Poolympics I agree that you need a GP appointment though, and maybe even a paediatric referral. Movicol is very effective.

WhatFreshHellIsThis · 30/04/2009 18:42

Thanks BitOfFun and Acinonyx and custardo - we might try the Poolympics over the Bank Holiday weekend and if things don't improve then we'll get a GP appt next week.

He told me today that he doesn't want the poo to come out because it's stinky so we talked about how it's good to get stinky things out so we can flush them down the loo - not sure how much he took in or listened, but one can but hope!

Juwesm I think we're going to run the Poolympics on an honesty basis for now, but thanks for the thoughts about independent judges! Not quite sure who I'd ask, to be honest.....

I wasn't volunteering....

Perhaps Gillian McKeith would help!

WhatFreshHellIsThis · 30/04/2009 20:44

Well, we kicked off the Poolympics tonight before bathtime. There was no opening ceremony, you might be pleased to hear, but having totted up today's scores retrospectively, DS1 is currently in the lead with three poos, one of which was in the potty

(Ok so technically he started pooing in the bath and I lifted him out onto the potty, but it still counts)

He got a small sticker for the two earlier poos, and a big one for the one in the potty, and is super proud of himself. He still cried when he pood, not because it hurt (tis all very soft and easy) but because he still hates the whole idea of pooing, but he is very pleased that he's winning. (DP and I are level pegging at a miserable one each.....)

We decided DS2 didn't qualify on the grounds that he's a bf 4 week old and poos all the blardy time

DP was rather taken aback to be quizzed about his poos as soon as he got home, but is broadly supportive of the idea, as long as we don't mention it outside the home!

So fingers crossed DS1's enthusiasm and competitive spirit persists until this poo phobia is over! Thanks custardo, you are a marvel.

Hurrah!! < hands out gold medal >
< really hopes this gets into any second edition of the toddler book >

Tortington · 01/05/2009 09:01

thats bloody brilliant! 3 poos wow!

Acinonyx · 01/05/2009 12:18

I think we might try the Poolympics too!

WhatFreshHellIsThis · 01/05/2009 20:06

Hmmmm, today we have had a set back. Two very tiny poos that obviously he just couldn't hold in, and then lots of tears just now because he really doesn't want to do a poo.

He's really upset about this, I think it might be appt at the doc's first thing Tuesday. His stomach is all hard and bloated, and he's really distressed but he just will not let himself poo.

He had a lovely day playing at a friend's house too, I really thought he might just forget about it and poo, but I think he might actually be so bunged up that it's too big and hard now. Looks like we'll be hitting the Movicol

Toddlers don't pop if they don't poo, do they?

WhatFreshHellIsThis · 08/05/2009 19:02

Just thought I'd update if anyone's still watching.....DS1 had four poos this morning, all soft, and none of them hurt!

He is very proud of himself. We did have a doctor's appt scheduled this pm but spoke to the doc on the phone instead as the idea of going to the doctor was upsetting DS1, and the doc said keep going with the lactulose and it sounds like we might be on the mend.

Also recommended kiwis, and we are having one a day at the moment, and they really do help.

Fingers crossed this progress continues

On the downside, I'm changing a lot of nappies at the moment....oh well, every silver lining has a cloud!

Pootastic!

WhatFreshHellIsThis · 08/05/2009 19:14

Can't believe how obsessed with poo we all are in this house at the moment! Orbit spends most of his waking life straining away and going purple in the face, DP is a bathroom hogger extraordinaire, and with DS1's problems, I think I'm the only one with no poo issues.....

A trial version of this worked for us.

Kandoo kit

Now if anyone can advise how DS2 (age 8) can significantly improve wiping before he goes on the French exchange in two weeks' time, I would be very grateful!
