My dd is (just) 4 and whenever friends have come round, I let them get on with it. I stay in earshot just in case but otherwise stay out of their way.

Dd knows that her older sister's room is off-limits, as is mine and dh's.

As ZoeC said, just leave them to it but stay within earshot, you want to be able to step in if they start emptying all the toys on to the floor or something, but you don't need to actually supervise or play with them.

Playdates are a great excuse to put your feet up and let someone else entertain your LO.

ok great- thanks v much! i'll just get some toys out and within easy reach and leave them to it. i am feeling nervous still!!! this little girl ha an older brother so i'm sure she'll be apro at it!! i guess i am worried we wont have anything that will entertain her as she seems more grown up than my dd!!

Then I imagine that a pile of cushions off the sofa and a big duvet plonked on the floor will do the trick - and some old clothes of yours for dressing up. That should keep them quiet for ages.
