When you talk about appreciating a LO's nap so you can 'get stuff done' how many of you are actually 'getting stuff done'?

And how many of you are just lazy slatterns like me?

I hear mothers say this all the time and it makes me feel really bad as I have a no housework during nap time rule! This goes for both DH and I, as he is at home with her more than me. We just both feel that it is so exhausting when they are awake and very difficult to get 'me' time. We both appreciate the 1-2 hours that she sleeps in the day and if she doesn't nap never mind her - I get cranky. Maybe it's because I also don't feel bad about doing housework when DD is around (it's not like I spend all day doing it or anything - minimal amounts).

And there is nothing like that first cup of tea when she is in bed, and catching up on MN or with the Apprentice, bliss!

So, is it just me or are you all off being industrious when your LO naps?

I used to read the paper!

spicemonster · 29/04/2009 18:40

I am massively industrious but that's because I'm largely a WAHM so the hours when he sleeps are my chance to do stuff! Having said that, I do also sit down for a cup of tea in peace when I've got all my chores done. And I have a cleaner

charmargot · 29/04/2009 18:40

Depends on the day. Sometimes lazy for whole of nap time, sometimes half, sometimes none. Just depends really. I do like to use the time to prepare dinner though so it's easier than when they're awake.

I never ever got anything doen during dcs naps, I went on Mumsnet

PinkTulips · 29/04/2009 18:49

see, ds2 at the feeding lots stage so my sat on my arse time is when he's awake and then when he sleeps i make a halfhearted attempt at housework..... sometimes

thefortbuilder · 29/04/2009 18:51

i'm with spicemonster - i have to try and make the most of it, although if they have both woken up in tandem i do sometimes crash out myself.

that said when i only had one, and wasn't starting my own business i'd catch up with all the cr*p i'd sky plussed

bamboostalks · 29/04/2009 18:53

I watch tv, surf internet, read paper, eat cake and chill.

squeaver · 29/04/2009 18:55

Me too Bamboo. And now I do the same when dd is at nursery for 3 hours a day

claireybee · 29/04/2009 19:00

I 'get stuff done', like drink tea, eat chocolate, MN....
I do sometimes use ds' nap to do things I wouldn't do while he is awake like clean the oven or put ant killer down but generally it is dd time or me time.

Bumperlicioso · 29/04/2009 19:03

Phew that makes me feel better! I'm only at home one day now, so it's a nice little break and a chance for some alone time, which is rare nowadays.

Well done to those of you who do housework!

I do stuff before putting my feet up. I'm 8 weeks pregnant and was just dozing off before she woke up today. Gutted. It was worse than no rest at all. Don't feel bad though - dull women live in clean houses.

frazzledgirl · 29/04/2009 19:04

If 'stuff' includes drinking coffee and MNing, I'm a powerhouse multitasker

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 29/04/2009 19:06

I try and get stuff done during his morning nap, but the getting stuff done includes drinking a cup of tea while I'm on MN!

After he goes to bed in the evening I don't do anything apart from DH and I clear up the dinner stuff between us - I might fold a bit of washing but that's it. Evenings are my wind down.

goldrock · 29/04/2009 19:46

I must be the only one who actually does stuff then, I always tidy the bombsite made by the olders DC that is the kitchen during morning nap time and then make the tea/do other housework and catch up on any computer work during the afternoon nap. I have to do it this way as my 13mo is at a stage where I can't get anything done while he's awake. Once the DCs are all in bed I make the lunches for the next day and get all their various kits ready.
I think I must be doing something wrong as I have still have newspapers unread from about a fortnight ago

compo · 29/04/2009 20:02

Now I have 2 and half hours free while dd is at presch and ds at sch and I sometimes prep the evening meal
but more often than not mumsnet and wathc crappy tv, eat too much and drink coffee, lol

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 29/04/2009 20:04

I whizz around for 1/2 hour or so then get a drink and put my feet up with the laptop and/or tv on

Nappyzoneisabeetrootrunner · 29/04/2009 20:08

In the hr b4 my ds nap i wizz round cleaning with him in tow making it a fun game for him to take the cups downstairs one at a time for me or empty a box then re fill it - i also wah on my days off so the min he gets in bed i parcel up anything remaining uber quick then its mumsnet, cup of tea, peaceful lunch..... refresh my mind then he wakes up - so ermmm get stuff done sort of not really......

mejon · 29/04/2009 20:50

DD hasn't reliably napped since she was around a year old and even then it was fairly hit and miss and for never more than an hour or so. It's only now that she has started at nursery for 2.5 hours twice a week I'm getting time for myself - I either pop into town quickly between dropping her off and picking her up or I head home and generally get to watch something other than Cbeebies without setting off a tantrum or come on here/surf the net.

bohemianbint · 29/04/2009 20:52

God, if either of mine would ever sleep I wouldn't waste it doing housework. I would read novels and eat cake. Sigh...

BiscuitStuffer · 29/04/2009 22:22

Ha Ha what a brilliant thread - I too was drawn in hook line and sinker that everyone apart from me was 'getting stuff done'. Brillaint - I think that we are all on a massive scive is magnificent!

Bumperlicioso · 30/04/2009 08:54

See biscuitstuffer I seem to be the only one not skiving! I'm very open about my 'no housework during nap time rule' so everyone just thinks I am a lazy slattern! From now on I'm going to tell people I'm 'getting stuff done'

PlumpRumpSoggyBaps · 30/04/2009 09:12

I do sometimes 'get stuff done'- but only stuff that would be ruined if ds2 caught sight of it (like sewing) or dangerous if he tried to help (like claireybee said).

And the other day, I did some ironing!!!!

But usually it's bum on sofa, tea and biscuits at the ready, and laptop + TV on. Pretty much like the evenings really.

And of course, on the days when I do do 'stuff', I also have to polish my halo.

HarryB · 30/04/2009 12:22

I actually do get stuff done, but it's only because DS naps in his bouncer and isn't "alarmed up" (as DH calls it) - as he is in his cot. Basically, still frightened to nap in case he stops breathing.
