Help for a hopeless godparent - what to buy for first birthday?

Please help! It's my god-daughter's first birthday at the end of next week and I am stumped as to what to get.

Criteria;

  1. Postable
  2. Not clothes - her Mum has her well stocked.
  3. Have already given books for other presents and have a book to give this time too. Parents are quite bookish anyway so imagine she will have lots.

All suggestions welcome!

A lovely child's bowl and cup set?

meep · 29/04/2009 10:52

You could buy something non-postable but order online to be delivered to her address?

this was the best and most used present dd1 got for her first birthday - in fact it is still well loved!

FrankMustard · 29/04/2009 10:58

sorry - missed the postable point! doh
but you could do what meep says and order it to be delivered!

Emma Bridgewater bowl and baby mug - her latest ones are decorated with ponies or (my favourite) dancing mice. From John Lewis, but you could also get online and have posted direct to them. Cost about £25. My DDs had duck and bunny ones as christening presents from godparents and love and still use now (4 and 6). Even do a melamine set -cheaper but I think not as nice. here

Ach I knew this was the place to come - both fab ideas and I am much liking the order-to-be-delivered approach. My own godmother uses this approach, and also used to write "present to follow" on almost all birthday cards, it was never a problem and added to the intrigue as she always bought the best gifts, worth waiting for. Off to browse JL!

ridingjoker · 29/04/2009 14:54

3rd the wheely bug. can get it delivered to her address intead of your

fizzpops · 29/04/2009 15:57

My DD has a wheelybug and she is just getting to the stage where she is ready to use it. So it would be great agewise.

We have the mouse one

magnummum · 29/04/2009 18:48

DD1 best 1st birthday present which still gets used and all visiting children have loved was a present from her godfather. Plastic Fisher Price sit on car but that could be adapted to be used as a push along thing when she was still only at the holding on and lurching forward stage of mobility so it has grown with her. (DH and I bought her the wheely bug mouse for said birthday as I thought it was so much cuter than plastic stuff and needless to say the plastic car won the birthday girl's vote!).

Letterbox (online) do some lovely aprons with names embroidered on. Actually, there are lots of lovely things in Letterbox.

BiscuitStuffer · 29/04/2009 22:31

galt pop up toy
wheelybug
more tomorrow need to go to bed....

meep · 30/04/2009 09:17

this was also a hit on dd1's first birthday:

frog in a box

tilbatilba · 30/04/2009 09:30

Mine were both given Steiff bears....very generous but are sooo wonderful and have out lived every other stuffed toy and will be treasured always.

VeryAnnieMary · 01/05/2009 12:56

Thanks all - I went with the Wheelybug as I completely fell for it - but will def use some of your other fab ideas for future birthdays and Christmas.

I knew this was the place to come for ideas! Now, what can I get my DH for his 33rd?......

How large do those Wheeybugs go up to.....?

PurpleCrazyHorse · 08/05/2009 20:39

Another idea...

Not postable (!) but DH and I painted a decorate your own money box for our god-daughter - it was a gorgeous pink pig. We had great fun doing it and its a little different. We bought paint and varnish rather than using the stuff that came with it as we wanted to put a couple of coats on.
