tips on potty training

I think my 27 month old is ready to start the dreaded potty training. she asks to sit on the potty (but rarely does anything in it). sometimes tells me she is having a wee or has had one etc.
So any tips? do i let her run around with a bare bottom or is it better to put pants on so she can feel it if she has a wee? put a potty whereever we are? I have a pottette. and was going to give her a sticker everythime she does a wee in the potty.
Any other ideas or suggestions?
Thanks

Hi petitmaman, I didn't want you to go unanswered! I think there are so many potty training threads on here some get overlooked intially.

I am currently training DD who is 28months. From my limited experience - we have been doing it for 2 weeks now with some successes and some setbacks too - I would suggest the following:

  • don't go for the bare bottom approach, because she will need to relearn how to get pants down and also pants do catch some of the accidents!
  • try just pants for the first day, have a potty nearby and regularly put her on it or ask her if she wants to go. If you have more successful attempts than accidents on day one then she may well be able to get the hang of it.
  • get her into full clothes as soon as possible after day one, so that she learns to hold it whilst pulling trousers down
  • don't force her
  • a helpful tip another MNer gave me was to direct her rather than ask, so phrase it as "lets use the potty before we play/have lunch/go outside", this is more positive than asking her a question like "do you need the potty" which is inviting her to say no!
  • if she is doing well after a day or two, move the potty to the bathroom so that she gets used to having to go there.

Good luck!

hiya
this is from cod's famous potty training bootcamp:

How do I do it :
You go COLD TURKEY - this is vital

You stay in for the first couple of days

You take them to the loo as oftne as you see fit - say every 30 mins

DO NOT ASK THEM -TAKE THEM

Distract them by a story or sweets for weeing in the correct place ( or telling you at anytime they need it even if they then miss the loo)

mine were never bothered by pottys - try the loo it makes life easier and more hygenic imfo

right

  1. this is for any kid over the age of 2
  2. imo the best age ie 2 - 2.5
  3. there is NO going back
do not start if you are going to poof out
  1. remmeber it is hard work - hence the training - yes life will be more difficult for a couple of weeks
  2. do NOT use pull ups for day time naps or anythin short of a 2 hour journey
  3. night training is a wholey seperate issue'

hope cod doesn't mind ,good luck! I'm currently doing dd 2.7 with this method
