Babies getting hot in cloth?

Hello,

DS wears MEOS or terries when we're at home in the daytime. They're so bulky that I don't bother with trousers at home, but when we're out I have to use disps so that I can get trousers on him.

I have a few pennies in the PayPal acct so I'm looking at getting a slimmer fitting nappy, perhaps a side-fastening one. He's 16 weeks but enormous at 18lbs and I doubt the MEOS will see us past Christmas, never mind to potty training. Given that the summer is coming up I don't want DS getting hot and clammy inside his nappies, and I wondered if people had experience of some nappies being cooler than others? I imagine the thick fleecey ones would get really uncomfortable, or am I missing something?

Thanks

Ds is 2y4m, and his favourite nappy without a doubt is the meos. He is over 30 lbs and it still fits fine.

In fact he's in the process of potty training himself but can be persuaded to put on his 'big nappy' if we need to, he refuses anything else.

When he was younger we had a Sandy's which was slimmer fitting and he liked just as much, but he grew out of it.

We also have some bamboo and microfibre ones, the microfibre do get quite hot I think.

Ella's House hemp are very slim and Wee Notions Northern Lights (although I don't have one of those yet). In hot summer (fingers crossed we have some days like that) I am intending to use slim nappies with fleece or wool wraps over the top as those wraps are very breathable.

Cloth would be no worse than disposables - these have chemicals in and can apparently get very warm inside.

ds wore bumgenius or wonderoos through two sweltering spanish summers and I never noticed him being too hot. always seemed to me that cloth would be cooler than plastic.

i worry about this too- i use ittis or sandys and airfloes. what wool would be good as i dont like fleece.

erm... sorry to point out the obvious but if you buy bigger size pants and just roll up the bottom it saves buying loads of new nappies and you'll get years out of them as when he potty trains you get to root out all the pants he grew out of that he suddenly fits again!

dd was in cloth in the heatwave of '06 and was happy enough, tbh i tend to strip them off in the house alot anyway and just mop up the puddles but i'd do the same in sposies, if anything they're sweatier as they're all plasticy.

ds1 grew out of MEOS at 6 months and then fitted them again from about 22/24 months until a few weeks ago (he's 2.9). they're body shape changes as they grow and move differantly.

just avoid anything that's fleece lined or microfibre if you're worried about the heat issue.

kissaluvs are lovely thin nappies, i bought a wide variety of size ones for ds2 and of all of them the kissaluvs are the best all round but again, just based on the pants issue i'd go with bigger pants... or if it's a nice hot summer, a nice wrap and no pants at all! wait and se if he does actually grow out of the MEOS, it's hard to predict a babies growth and body shape. (although, obviously if its a case of wanting some pretty new nappies go nuts, lord knows i found excuses to but whole new sets for both my boys )

i'm not keen on wool for daytime.... in fact i've not had much luck with my wool wraps at all... they don't clean well if poo gets on them, dd's all disintergrated from her acid pee and they ooze alot if any pressure gets on them at all.

sorry, that was very rambling, dp is playina video game that keeps distracting me with explosions and stuff!

18lbs, in cloth he should fit about 9-12 months pants but obviously sizes vary according to manufacturer.

either that or put the money towards some cut4cloth clothes they're very cute my internet connection is ridiculously slow tonight do i can't get you a link but just google them and you'll find them quick enough.

Hi there
I used to worry about this too, but I think that, in fact, cloth nappies in general, are very breathable, and keep them cool. I think that fleece and wool are actually more breathable than PUL wraps.

Having said that, I believe that the chemical reaction in disposable nappies creates quite a lot of heat, and has been linked in research with fertility problems for boys later in life?

At the moment, I am putting my 10 month old in a variety of pocket nappies during the day. Itti Bitti D'Lish are very slim fitting, low cut, (and side-fastening with snaps) and seem to keep him nice and cool. They have a suede-cloth (like fleece) topped booster, which draws the wet away from their skin, and keeps him dry - so not clammy.

They are so slim-fitting, they are very similar size-wise to disposables, and will go under most types of trousers. I do buy the next size up though, and go for the cheaper types of stretchy trousers that you can buy in e.g. Asda/Sainsbury's rather than Gap. It seems that the cheaper brands are more generously cut around the bottom area!

Ellas house and lots of bamboo nappies are slim to go under your covers and natural fabrics. For an al in one go for the new easyfit in bamboo - slim and natural fabrics.

Thanks. Will read up on the various naps recommended. Perhaps I should have mentioned that we've been given 100% of DS' wardrobe as hand-me-downs and although I can afford one or two more cloth naps, I can't afford to go and buy a shedload of trousers the right size to go over a 'normous cloth bum.

I had some of the pointy-tab Fuzzis and they leaked constantly and really put me off. Are the round tabs any better?
