huge anxiety about my toddler getting out their cot - help

i know i am being overly anxious about this and worrying way too early about it as my little boy is only 15 months old but once toddlers get close to possibly getting out their cot how have you made it safe - i sleep pretty badly since i had my ds anyway but now i don't know how i will sleep well knowing he might get out. how do other mums cope with this. is there any tips on how you made the upstairs of the house safe at night so if your child got out it was ok? i know to put cushions on the floor etc once he might start getting out but does anyone have tips. ps i know i am being pfb about this but i am really genuinely very anxious about it

thanks

Mine never made any attempt to get out of the cot and we moved him into a big bed with no incident.
If he is getting curious about climbing out, put some pillows down.
Also, if you do not already use one, try a baby sleeping bag as these make it harder to climb.

Put him in a bed if you're worried. My DD2 was in a big bed from 13 months, with a bed guard up (and a trundle bed pulled out underneath), she never fell out or had any accidents. We have also got a guard on the top of the stairs.

I would advise you put a stairgate on his bedroom door, make sure all furniture in his room is secure, and perhaps use a monitor so you can easily hear when he wakes up.

the first time DS1 got out of his cot, he just came down stairs and said "Hello Mummy Daddy - morning now" - we were in the garden having a beer - it was about 8pm!

The next day,we took the sides off his cot and made it into a bed. We have a stair gate at the top of the stairs - there wasn't really anything else dangerous around but, TBH, all of mine have always come straight into our room when they wake up anyway

None of my three ever tried to get out either despite all turning out to be little monkeys. My youngest turned 2 in Feb and she is still in her cot. I was a little worried about her as she is in a new part of the house and it has concrete floors but she has made no attempt to climb out at all. She only goes into her cot at sleep time and has a pretty good routine so maybe that's why it's all good. If you're really worried you could put a mattress in front of the cot. I did this when my other two moved into their big beds. Then it didn't matter if they fell out. Good luck and don't worry too much - I'm sure you won't have any problems.

We put a stairgate on DS's room when he went into a bed. Then we know that he is in his room and safe - he'd be running the taps in the bathroom otherwise !

If you don't want to put him in a bed yet lower cot side so it's safer for him to climb out, put stair gate on door, remove all books/toys/ojbects you'd rather he didn't get his hands on, you can try a sleeping bag - works with some children but not all (50/50 split in this house lol)

If you do the monitor option - make sure it's somewhere well out of reach (tops of chest of drawers or wardrobes I have discovered are not safe ) otherwise they'll creep out and switch it off LOL.

oh - and good luck

FWIW - my DS1 NEVER climbed out of his cot - he was the easiest child imaginable to put into his bed - I don't think he realise he could get out of the bed as for MONTHS he would lie there shouting "mummeeeee" in the mornings for me to go and get him out (he was 2 by this time!)

DS2 - was escaping from his cot, still inside his gro-bag by 14 months. - We lowered the side and let him get on with it he eventually went into a bed at just under 3yrs old.

DS3 - started climbing out about 1 1/2 months ago (he'll be 2 next month). I put him into the bottom bunk - and put a stairgate on the door - I often find him on the top bunk with DS2 in the mornings

I never bothered with a bed guard for any of them - DS2 was the worst "faller out" - and he soon got used to where the edge of the bed was and stopped (although sleeping with his bum sticking a foot of the bed can't have helped).

DS climbed out of his cot at about 2. We had a blanket box at the end of cot, so he used that. He was in a grobag and shuffled along the landing - soooo sweet!

We had a stairgate already and left it at that. To be fair he never got out at night only when it was morning (had a bunny alarm clock - so he knew when he could get up!)

We didn't put him into a bed until he was 3 even though he could escape. Didn't seem to be any real need. he never fell out of bed.

dd climbed out by14 mos~we put one side of the cot by the wall and the other next to the bed~with the cot side down if too far.
