Sling backache 5 week old loves Baby Bjorn but hates Kari Me, Ergo newborn insert better?

DS is 5 weeks old and will not sleep in his cot during the day just the pram or sling. I've got a 2.5 year old as well so the sling is very useful.

He sleeps very well in the Baby Bjorn but screams the place down if I put him in the Kari Me. My back is killing me, I'm only 5ft, recovering from a CS and have a big baby already 11 1/2 lbs. I love my Ergo but haven't got a newborn insert as I read they weren't very good.

Any other sling recommendations or advice on what I'm doing wrong with the kari me. The Baby Bjorn is dreadful on my back and shoulders help.

What about a wilkinet? much better than the hell that is a baby bjorn. Still a body bit like the baby bjorn but tie straps which make adjusting and wearing it more comfy.

I found the baby bjorn active fit (with the extra back support) is really comfy - I used to use a hugabub find this better now my dd is heavier (about 14lb). I'm lucky though - she is nearly 6 months so have had time to recover and get used to lugging her about before she got heavy!

I'd go for a MeiTai rather than a Wilkinet as it will last longer. Very comfy. I think Joey slings are supposed to be good for petite women

looking for something to last me until DS is around 4 months and can go in the Ergo. How is the Wilkinet different from the baby bjorn? Isn't a Mei Tei similar to a Kari Me? Desperate to get another sling by the weekend before my back gives way!

What positions have you tried your DS in in the KariMe? Does he have tight hips?

IIRC a Kari Me is a stretchy wrap, whereas a MT is a square of fabric with a long strap out of each corner (so you tie it round your waist like an apron, sit DS in and then use the other 2 over your shoulders to make it all safe)

If you're trying a FWCC with the Kari Me and his hips are too tight for him to wrap around you comfotably, could you try some kind of cradle carry? A MT might work as you can tuck a little one in like a little buddha (legs inside the sling and crossed).

Have you come across www.slingmeet.co.uk? Its a longshot before the weekend, but if you could find a meet near you, you could get some hands on advice and try some options to see if there was something that was comfy for both you and DS before buying.

Otherwise, UKbabywearingSWAP and Natural Mamas are both good places to look for slings 2nd hand (cheaper to buy, and you can sell them on if they don't work!)

I feel for you - I didn't have a CS but DD was 9lb12 and grew fast. I'd have died without a sling we both got on with (for us it was a hug-a-bub)

Not terribly helpful, but I found the Ergo newborn insert a right faff and it offset the weight distribution on my shoulders, so would not recommend it. Now DS is older though I loooove the Ergo.

redflipflops · 24/04/2009 16:43

I didn't find wilkinet good once baby getting heavier. Thin straps still dig in!

iwantitnow · 24/04/2009 21:53

Umm v perplexed about how a baby can have tight hips

I'm going to try the Bjorn active as it seems the only one that will take the weight off my shoulders thats why I love me ergo as the weight goes on the hips.

Iwantitnow, I would save your money. I had the Babybjorn active for ds and gave up at 5 days old, when he was only about 8lb. That thing killed my back. I got a Close and the difference was amazing. I got a Kari Me afterwards and loved that too. Have you tried a cradle hold in one?

IlanaK · 24/04/2009 21:58

I was going to say a Close too. You can get them at John Lewis and Mothercare so it would fulfill the need you have to get something immediately. They are a similar material to the KariMe but easier to use. I loved mine until ds3 was about 6 months old when he bacame too heavy for it as it is a stretchy material. The good thing was they sell extremely well on ebay so I got a lot of my money back.

I now use a Beco Butterfly 2 which is similar to the Ergo. It has an excellent infant insert that is not a faff to use at all. However, as you already have an Ergo, £90 would be a huge outlay so probably not for you.

I might be miles off on the tight hips front. I've seen it in an older boy (about 5 months) that had been carried a LOT in a baby bjorn - his hips were so tight he could not get his legs into the right position to be carried in a FWCC, he couldn't even sit on a hip comfortably, and so he (and his mother) hated trying to use a wrap. I don't know whether he always had slightly tight hips or whether they developed that way from being in the BB so much.

A good wrap or MT tied properly should spread the weight across your entire back (and partially onto your hips) very effectively - they certainly shouldn't hang off your shoulders.

Good luck
