Any top tips?
She's wet herself about 4 times, sits on the potty but doesn't do anyting and then wets herself 5 minutes later
She doesn't like her clothes being wet which is a start I guess, she loves her big girls pants and likes to sit on her trainer seat on the loo
she doesn't seem all that comfy on the potty and tries to get up as soon as I it her on it
I want to do the whole fuss and choc button thing when she does something on the potty or loo but how do I get her to actually do something so I can do the joyful dancing around the room?!

anyway she went in the pushchair on a towel for the school run, was dry when she woke up when we came home (takes about 40 minutes, I asked her if she wanted to sit on the potty (she said no, standard response) and then weed all over the kitchen floor

Sorry but no top tips but just wanted to say 1 way I got my lo to stay on the potty/toilet is to slowly count to 20 with her.

My lo prefers the toilet with trainer seat rather potty.

Hope than helps a little.

I'd stop

How old is she?

compo · 22/04/2009 20:03

2 years 7 months
she knows when she poos and wees though and is really proud of her big girls pants

DD2 is 2.8 and decided she wanted knickers-not-a-nappy a couple of weeks ago

She has wet herself once and pooed herself once in that time (and got upset about the poo as she didn't get there in time)

I don't need to tell her to go, at all. She just does it. I don't have to do the "well done, well done!" clapping business either

I had the completely opposite experience with dd1, btw, who was a nightmare with the whole PT malarkey. Which is why I wanted to wait until dd2 told ME when to PT! (tbh was quite suprised she did it, was kind of out of the blue)

So I know that if I was you I'd go back to nappies for another month or so and see how it pans out

compo · 22/04/2009 20:39

maybe you're right
I did ask her a couple of times if she wanted to wear nappies again and she said no

notnowbernard · 22/04/2009 21:10

Aw, don't be sad! She is still a baby, really, isn't she?

(dd2 is my baby, anyway!)

I know a few dc who around their 3rd birthday announced that they were going to wear pants/knickers... no fuss, no stress, just did it

I think if a child needs reminding/encouraging/coercing/bribing to go to the toilet all of the time, then they're probably not ready

Put it this way, she won't be starting school in nappies, will she?

I started training on Monday afternoon - we got through no fewer than 20 pairs of pants yesterday. Today we had 4 wees all or part on the potty plus several and a poo that missed completely. She hates sitting on the potty (loved it before we actually started training) and always says she doesn't need to go. Unlike yesterday she has had some long stretches with no wee (longest 3.5 hours) and woke up from her nap with a dry nappy.

It seems that she hasn't started to understand the signals yet - she doesn't know she needs to wee until it is actually happening. Like you compo I'll ask her to sit on the potty and a couple of mins later she will wee on the floor. Tis much grimmer than I expected - particularly cleaning up the poo in pants that smeared down her legs when I tried to remove her clothes and that's only the first poo since we started - I expect to have lots more to clean up... If we don't make progress by the weekend will be very tempted to give up.

notnowbernard · 22/04/2009 21:37

Yes, Newlark, I'd be giving up too!

How old is your dd?

newlark · 22/04/2009 21:39

She is 2.5 - was really keen to start, chose "big girl" pants and a sticker chart but she isn't enjoying the reality of wetting her pants - can't say I blame her...

notnowbernard · 22/04/2009 21:43

It probably won't be too long though before she does get the signals (ie to get to the potty/toilet before she starts to actually go)

We started on good friday as this gave us several days of both me & DP dealing with it esp as I am 7 mo pregnant.

Day 1 was like yours. We went through 7 or 8 pairs of pants. Lots of sitting on potty for ages (once on getting her to stay there no problem but if nothing coming, wouldnt get off for up to half hour) then flood of wee 5 mins later. Did finally manage to do a wee in the potty at bedtime and was overjoyed as were we.

Day 2 she seemed to have grasped when doing it so only 1 poo accident as time to get to potty from starting but still several wee accidents as not getting to potty in time. Would shout "I'm weeing" so generally half in pants, half in potty.

Day 3 similar to day 2 but no poo accidents and smaller amount in pants then most in potty but then went to friends and had 3 accidents in 1 hours including a complete flood which she seemed unaware of when she turned on toy hoover (I think it was the frequency). DP was desparing & ready to give up as Gina Ford had said she should have got it by day 3. But then at bedtime she asked for potty & did big wee before bed so managed to convince DP to give it another day.

Day 4 something clicked - asking for potty, only one little accident of a bit of wee in pants but not enough to wet trousers getting to potty to do wee.

That was a week and a half ago and I can probably count on one hand the accidents. No accidents in buggy or car or shopping trolley. Have managed some trips to park and has let us know in time to get back to the buggy from the other side to get potty out. Not yet managed to move potty to bathroom during day. Still need to be in same room or at least next door but am proud of how she is doing as is only 2y 4mo but needed to try now so time to settle before new baby arrives or else I dont know when we would have been ready to try again.

Dont despair. Remember she is used to just being able to wee & poo wherever whenever. She needs time to learn the signals & feeling. If she is loving her big girl pants (mine is) and doesnt want to go back to nappies, give her a chance. She will also feel that sense of achievement when finally does it in the potty and you can dance round the room together. Good luck.

Top Tip (from fellow potty training friend): Don't let the new potty training child eat all the apricots at snack time.

compo · 23/04/2009 20:33

well I'm definitely not giving up now
she went to nursery today and did all her wees in the potty there
although her knickers did feel a bit damp when I lifted her out of the car
but when I tried to put her on the potty before bed she didn't want to so bizarrely no wees in the potty at home still!!
can't go back now, nursery would think I was a loon. almost wish she was there full time

thanks nct73 and NNB - really glad you replied to my OP

third full day for us and dd was at nursery - only two accidents and did a poo in the potty but I don't think she actually did a wee in the potty. I think she is holding it in and doesn't know how to go - she reluctantly sat on the potty a couple of times when we got home this afternoon and then as soon as she got in the bath this evening it all cam flooding out and she was quite upset.

notnowbernard · 24/04/2009 20:58

Newlark - just to share my experience of potty training just before the arrival of a sibling: dd1 'got it' quite quickly, but had the usual amount of accidents along the way, and needed lots of reminding and encouraging and sometimes was reluctant (wilfull then, wilfull now!) But was ok. But she did relapse BIG TIME with the arrival of dd2... not on the poo front but lots and lots of wetting. If I had the time again, I definitely would have waited and left her in nappies until well used to dd2. Much easier dealing with nappies than a frequent wetter, IMO (going out and about was a PITA frankly)

Btw, am not in any way saying this will happen for you . But it is fairly common, so be prepared!

Good luck with dc2 and congratulations
